The earliest TV footage of them is from around 1960. They were embraced by the Australian entertainment and music industry who could see their talent. However, they weren't embraced so much by the record buying teenagers, until a few years later in 1966 when they started putting out some decent songs andrecordings.Record producer Nat Kipner was a big influence. Barry was writing lots of songs for other artists with some success, They perservered and went back to England where another Australian, Robert Stigwood gave them their big break with a recording contract soon after after arriving. It’s cliche, but also untrue. I get what you’re saying....I’m a huge fan of 60s and 70s music in particular....but it’s just not true there is less talent now. @Richard Hewet comment is on point. People that say this are just commenting on the style of music they hear now not being to their taste. Nothing wrong with that, just don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s due to a lack of talent. Also, you’re not hearing all the crap that came out of past eras, that has been filtered out for you. I love the sentiment though.....good stuff here.

Bee Gees, maybe like no other artist, had a gift to re-invent themselves. From the band in the sixties, they then surfed the disco era, then they come back even later, and so on. At one moment I was afraid that they would become a punk band.

Not to mention all of their work in the music industry that they did for other artists. They were more than just a band. I feel they were bigger than many realize. People thought they were just a disco band. They wrote songs for many people. They wrote the theme song for the movie Grease. Very talented family.

It's so interesting to see that even though the Beatles music had reached down under in 1963, the clothing and hairstyles were still 1950s Frankie Avalon... I remember this era and when the changes hit in Brooklyn, New York about a year later. The Vitalis and Brylcreem looks were suddenly out and the new cool look was the Mop Top!

Like your comment. I thought the doo wops were still around locally in the Brooklyn and Bronx areas through the mid-sixties. Chicago grease look continued into the end of the sixties in most south side high schools. Talented performers but prefer these ' 63 Bee Gees to the later versions,

The look really changed almost overnight in NYC after The Beatles played on Ed Sullivan. But there were always some who didn't change but those were mostly older guys and fathers. :) I recall seeing the Mod look become a thing around 1966; i.e. Andy Warhol, The Who, Lovin' Spoonful, The Rascals, and The Velvet Underground. In 67/68 long hair, facial hair, and hippy SF clothes became a thing with the NYC Woodstock generation...@@TheChitown5

In Chicago it depended what part of the city or suburb you were in. Sections of the Northside and Oak Park had the hippie look but ran into conflict with the gang oriented greasers. The Bee Gees greased look and continental slacks seen here was still in vogue where I went to high school through the late sixties. Never identified with the mop top look or music of the post Beatle era, although I understand the changes were necessary for free expression. Ironically, seventies groups from the same blue collar grease areas went totally British Invasion like Cryan Shames, Buckinghams, Chicago and Styx. The Brighton Park Kelly High School1970 yearbook where my cousin graduated on Chicago's southwest side looked like 1959. Guys with Elvis pompadours and girls with beehives. The south side Gousters black community nearby still sported processed hair, pleated pants, stacy adams shoes and stepped off of upbeat jazz, soul and doo wop cuts. @@robbrown4621

@@garymorris1856 - Is that why the brothers are listed in the top 2 songwriters with Lennon/McCartney? They wrote over 1000 songs for themselves and had big stars REQUEST them to write songs for them like Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers and others...all hits. People covered Beatles' songs but I don't believe many stars actually REQUESTED them to write songs just for them nor produce others' LP's. They wrote for themselves (and only a couple of flash in the pans like Peter and Gordon and Billy J Kramer who were friends). There is no logic berating the Gibbs for their 50+ year career. The Beatles lasted barely 10. The last year they toured the couldn't even sell out. I know because I saw them 3 years in a row. When it comes to unique voices and harmony singing The Beatles were average by comparison to Barry's falsetto and Robin's vibrato. I was around for both of them (I'm 73) and comparing their catalogs (If you actually know both in depth and not just the disco crap) in quality and longevity they were both stellar. Two totally different groups and both amazing. You can't compare this video of young kids covering a Beatles song but they did a pretty good job.

@@garymorris1856 - I am well aware of the Beatles successes and especially their massive cultural influences (civil rights, fashion, hair, irreverence, etc.) in a very Puritanical and even depressing time (Vietnam, Kennedy, etc.) and I am also a massive fan of them, both collectively and individually, but your comment was about songwriting. The quantity and quality of Bee Gees songs is immense and varied, just as much as The Beatles. Other major artist were requesting songs from the Gibbs in droves and they became hits. While still in the musical wilderness of Australia there were American artists who recorded some of their compositions (Andy Williams, Wayne Newton....I know schmaltzy) and they were still kids! Other Aussie groups like The Seekers recorded their songs when they couldn't get a hit themselves. When The Beatles were that age they wrote very little but were primarily covering other peoples' songs like the Gibbs are here. Also, vocally while good and good harmonizers, the genetic blend of the Gibbs and the uniqueness of their individual voices was beyond any of the Beatles. Could any of The Beatles sing with Robin Gibb's natural vibrato (who was called "The Pavarotti of pop") or sing falsetto? (BTW, I'm not a falsetto or disco fan.) The answer is simple, no they couldn't. Their vocal ranges were definitely limited. Even the acerbic Lennon praised their songwriting and voices and gifted Maurice with a guitar for his 21st birthday. McCartney invited Robin to speak at Liverpool University about composing. When the Bee Gees performed in London in 1968 the crowd pushed past McCartney and Jane Asher to get at the Gibbs. He said, "We had our time, now it's their turn". As musicians, the only good musician in The Bee Gees was Maurice who could play any instrument they threw at him while The Beatles were all good musicians. The point is, The Beatles respected The Bee Gees and they in turn idolized The Beatles. The Beatles opened the door for The Bee Gees and dozens of others. It's not totally fair comparing them by saying "not even close" because as far as composing and vocalizing, they WERE close. Sadly, The Bee Gees got unfairly labelled with the disco tag when they thought they were doing R&B. They said they didn't even know what disco was. Disco devolved into overexposed trashy crap. After that they were poison and blackballed. Sad because their 80's and 90's songs were terrific. Do you know that era of their music? The Beatles themselves admired them and in fact they were often mistaken for them early on. Just because you are a fan of one you should still be able to respect both for their accomplishments as I do. When I saw The Beatles THREE times I couldn't even hear them and they admitted that for that reason they no longer wanted to tour. Since then I have seen McCartney and Ringo solo and enjoyed both immensely.

And structure. The Beatles always put a bridge or "middle eight" in their songs. Today's top 40 is just mindless hooks, with no thought to letting the song build or breathe.
