I'm here to say as I have almost completed my first year having bees that trapping your queen in the bottom box between two queen excluders can work. It pays to not know what you're doing though 😂. My bees swarmed in September. I only had the one hive and no extra comb, so I caught the swarm and stuck it back in the lower box, found the queen, marked her, isolated her there, killed all the other queen cells I could find. Left it for several weeks, came back and inspected it later in the fall and finally found....drumroll....a new queen. It was awesome....And then my husband accidentally killed the new queen last week during inspection when we were trying to mark it 😢. The trials continue....

I just found you through Google… I have my first bee class tomorrow and wanted to brush up on some videos first! The best part about the video I watched was that you are from Illinois like me!! I can’t wait to watch more!

@@beekHi! It went really well! I adore bees and am more in love with them now. I took it at Joliet Junior college. Do you think I still have time to order bees?

The best results I have for gettiing the bees to draw out wax in one week, place an empty frame in the brood nest. In a week it will be fully drawn and full of eggs.

Yes and the timing is during the spring or a strong nectar flow.

Inner cover--Notice that on European movies that show beekeepers, they always pull off a piece of burlap in use rather than an inner cover.

I’ve used burlap as an inner cover too before.

I just realized yesterday that March is my 1 year anniversary as a beekeeper! First year, I ended up with 4 hives, all 4 over wintered successfully as of today! I have one hive that for some reason likes making comb completely under the hive, hanging off the mesh screen! none of my other hives do that. Is there a way to discourage that, or do I need to consider a solid base for that particular hive? One more question, how many hives do you manage David? Thank you so much for your content! I enjoy your videos daily!
@beek

Wow, why are they making comb under your hives? I manage more hives than I should given my video production and speaking and writing schedule.

I had a queen try to dart out the side of the hair clip style one time and she accidentally got crushed. But that has only happened once.

Hi David, Question, I am rescuing a wild hive that have taken over a tire in a barn nearby, It is a pretty big hive, and I was wondering if I should capture the queen and if I do how long should I keep her in a cage in my new hive, or should I just put her in the new hive with all the others? Thanks.

Got four double hives. Had two survive, two dead outs. Live in indiana. Question is... I now have 40 frames of honey and pollen that has been through, brood, mite treatments oa, chemicals. Forty frames is appropriately 200 + lbs. The other two hives would only store this contaminated honey just too much. Any suggestions. Thank you, Al

Hay David, I've been wondering; is it in good practice to use plastic foundation for honey harvest. I'm already using plastic in the brued box? Thanks

I do and I like it because you can spin at high speed without a blow out.

Why would I have to remove the honey super(during this time of the season) if I am feeding 1 to 1 sugar water? I thought I am stimulating the queen to lay.
@beek
6 ай бұрын
When you reach a point where you want your bees to collect nectar for honey, you need to stop feeding. Sometimes when you feed sugar water with a honey super on they may store sugar water as your honey.

Newsflash. Queen excluders are drone excluders. They will die inside and make a mess. Surprised an expert would suggest.

In a recent video I stressed to only leave the queen excluder on long enough to deal with the swarm tendency about 10 days.

@beek

They are a type of Warre hive built kinda more simple. Skewers for top bars. Created by Sam Comfort. I've never tried to run one.
