First round of brood is small because of the low numbers in the colony. Second round of brood has the first round to help support them. I usually look at 42-45 days which gives me 2 cycles to really have those foragers building up. I’d rather have “too many” bees early and not have enough when I need them.

Hey David! It *is* pronounced "noo- fuhnd-luhnd" you were right when you said it wasn't that 😂 Just opened our two hives last week and found them all dead, but have salvaged honey from the hives! I want to catch a swarm this swarm season (which is when, by the way?) but my friends and family keep saying not to do it because we're expecting our first baby May 3rd (will everyone tell their bees the good news as per old folk tradition?! 😊) Cheers

She can run out of room to lay, at which time you may have to harvest some of the honey to make room for brood.

Hi David, Sorry so long…. just checked 2 of my hives today, southeast Wyoming. Cold and windy like your area. One of my hives was dead, not sure why. They still had their wings on so not mice this year. But tons and tons of black & red ants. I’ve had them all over my hives since starting bees 3 years ago. They were in the hive that was alive as well, just not in the massive numbers. I used candy boards this year, first time, that is what the ants liked. I stopped entrance feeders in an attempt to minimize the ant attractant. Not sure what to do with the ants, pretty fed up, they are all over. I can’t even check on the hives without them crawling and biting me. Last year I tried ant killer pellets around the hives, covering with cinder blocks so the bees didn’t get to it. Almost at wits end with replacing my bees every year now. I lost 2 of the other 3 hives as well I have 30 miles away. Thank you so much for any info or ideas. Becky

@@beek Last year I moved them to about 30ft away. It seemed to work for a little bit, but just temporarily. But I do have room to move them further away, maybe on the other side of the property. I’ll get that done and see how that works. Will have to move them back before winter this year as the wind gets to 100mph, so I have them in a valley. Thanks so much for the idea!

Hi David. I just found one of my 2 hives is dead, empty. It is 70 degrees in mid state Indiana today and I'm feeding sugar water. The one surviving hive is out flying coming in and out of my empty dead hive. Should I leave that dead hive where it sits and let the strong hive use it or take it away and split the strong hive this spring?

Better buy those nuc's asap, it is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Once you see queen cells, you have less than two weeks before the old queen swarms and you want to split right before she swarms.

I live in Southern Georgia. I have 3 nucs coming later this month , should I give them pollen Pattie’s , hive alive and sugar water ? And treat with apiguard ?
@beek
6 ай бұрын
Generally quality nucs have been treated by the supplier. Pollen patties can attract SHB in Georgia pretty fast. Sugar water shouldn't be necessary as a nuc should have plenty of resources and you should have plenty of foraging resources by the end of the month.
