The thought process you're referring to, I call a reset. Humans aren't as seperate and unique as we try to think we are. We form mini hives. We get caught up with everything buzzing around us. It can slowly seep in and influence us subconsciously. You have to find a way to disconnect and reset your thinking. Hobbies are great. I'm outdoorsy so hunting, hounds( I love my dogs), and now bees help me to find my center. It's my first winter with bees. I go down and check on my one hive at least once a week. I went down one day and I couldn't hear them buzzing. I pressed my ear to the hive...nothing. I felt that panic from deep down and my stomache got tight. Last ditch I knocked on the hive and they proudly announced their presence. It was immediate relief and gratification. That's when I realized I was emotionally attached.

It is amazing to me that less than a year ago I couldn't tell the difference between capped brood and capped honey and I remember asking you as a beeteam6 member. I cringe but chuckle about it now. Wow, on beginner terms I have come a long way and kept my bees alive this winter as a bonus. It wasn't by accident, I have put work into it studying and using intuition and common sense a lot. Thanks for everything.

Hi David, I enjoyed every minute of your video. I am almost into my 2nd year of beekeeping. You are an awesome teacher. Upbeat, clear and energetic. I truly appreciate you. One thing I still find tricky with inspecting the hives is the actual handling of frames. Picking them up, holding them to look, smoking the hive if needed while I try and find the queen, etc. just feels very awkward. Coffee. I am almost embarrassed to admit how many different methods and equipment I have tried over the years. I have French press, Chemex, Nespresso, drip, pour over, Toddy maker, etc I go through phases where I want to use the chemex. Then I do French press. Company coming? I pull out the drip coffee maker. In the summer, I love using the Toddy maker to make my coffee. You might want to try that method especially as you have ready to go hot water. I hear you regarding making yourself do something uncomfortable to shake yourself out of a plateau. I am in a funk right now but I attribute it to winter weather ( up north in Michigan) and late onset irritation with Covid disrupting and changing all our lives. I am also chasing a dream that just seems to be like pushing a boulder up a mountain. I am trying to focus on three things each day that will reenergize me. Drink water, read something uplifting, get outside, etc….. Thanks so much for your videos.

Well David I love coffee also and enjoy the "ritual" you have developed with your coffee! Love it! With the cold that we have had the last three days have made it interesting with -6 here in Kalispell, MT. I was able to put new candy boards on when it was in the high 40s. They seem to be doing well and looking forward to warm weather and then checking on the girls again. Thank you for the education and by far you have helped me be a better bee man. So many give pieces of the pie but not the detail and full circle of bee keeping. Thank you again.

Thank you for showing how you also enjoy roasting coffee. I use the same brand roaster my roaster only lets me pick from low, mid and high heat. I pick high heat and run for about 4.5 minutes. Around first crack. I like to wait a minimum of 24 hours before grinding. I used to use a hand grinder. The last one broke after about a year of use. I now just use fast electric grinder. I heat water to around 208 degrees. I use pour over coffee strainer.

Hello David first times on your channel. Yes this year I'm getting bees. I have been reading books watching vids for three years about bees . Built swarm traps (no luck last year), built a horizontal hive from Dr. Leo and read the book bee keeping with a smile. I live in north Idaho in the Mountains. cold winters short growing season. I keep looking for honey bees around my place I see very few lots of bubble bees and other pollinators. I ordered two nuc's and waiting eagerly to get started. thank for what you are doing can't wait to see first hand up close how bees do what they do. I know that doing is how to learn.

I have a Breville Nespresso Vertuo coffee maker (I think made by De'Longhi now) and has lasted for years. Capsules are pricey but a far cry from the warm coffee the Keurig makes which my husband uses with his Black Rifle K-cups, he only puts honey in his. I use only Ozarka water bought in the larger 34oz drinking bottles available at Sams.(Not the gallons, too awkward to fill the tank and never use sink water,I use Land O'Lakes Half and Half and occasionally for enjoyment will use the frother. I will make Bulletproof with one of my two or three cups which I have gone back to the actual Bulletproof brand of collagen and MCT Brain Octane. Just trust their products. My daughter and son-in-law gave me a French Press and a grinder for Christmas and it does make an excellent coffee and still playing with it from time to time to get it right. I use a teakettle for the hot water. I program a Cuisinart drip 14 cup pot of good old Folgers Classic sometimes on weekends so it's ready when I get up and I know others will help drink it.

I think this is year 6 for me as a beekeeper, I'm nursing the only surviving hive of four right now. Gave them a pollen patty and 16 ozs of honey in a Mason jar feeder today to help them out, as they say until you have a hive that survives Winter, you'll not a beekeeper. As far as life challenges, I had someone from HS alumni Facebook group ripped me awhile back about being an average student. This is coming from someone who is still using a picture of him running cross country in 1968 as his FB header photo. After I listed what I had done since HS, example, wrote and published a non-fiction history book, learned to fly airplanes and helicopters, worked in 13 counties on four continents. ridden hundreds of thousands of miles on a motorcycle visiting 48 states & parts of Canada in the process plus family, I never heard another word from him. Retirement hobbies include beekeeping and teaching myself to play the banjo. BTW coffee down at the diner works for me. Espresso/coffee con leche in Africa and South America was rough to drink.

If you live out in the country, basically you just need to register your hives with the Illinois Dept of Ag. However, some cities and counties could have further requirements and you would have to research your specific area. If in doubt, you could ask your Illinois bee inspector.
