As a collector (not investor or dealer), it's very clear to me that a lot of the unrealistic high prices of books came from really good movies staying true to the comics (for the most part). Now that new movies are straying more from the source material... the movies are not good.... just meh. Until you start getting really good movies again, prices are gonna be low, so be careful about paying high prices for comics, and don't overlook the dollar bins as you can start a really good collection and trading extras over time.

I agree with your take on the large auction houses. Personally, I will never use Heritage as a seller because of the excessive fees. 10% seller's commission, but then a so-called 20% buyer's premium, which is nothing more than additional seller's commission (for a total of 30% seller's commission). Very difficult to make money with that fee rate unless, as you mention, it is a super grail.

It's amazing how many Hulk 181's are out there and how many people own multiple copies. Regarding the "you ship first", no, "you pay first" challenges... IMO, if you're willing to sell or pay tens of thousands on a small pile of grails why not pay another $200 or $300 to fly to the location and do a face to face deal then fly back? Overnighting and insuring isn't much cheaper. Obviously this may not be feasible for a large collection but if I'm spending or selling $60K worth of books I'm flying in. If you can afford to own or buy books that expensive you can afford a roundtrip flight or road trip - even an overnight stay.

@Darth.Shredder

@@BrysComics Well, sure if someone gives in as he eventually did in this case, great but if he refused to overnight the books and you refused to pay first, then the deal would have been lost, right? I mean it's easy to shrug off my point when things worked out but what if they didn't? Even $1k, which I think is high, but I have no idea where either of you live (you could be 500 miles apart for all I know) and staying overnight might not even be necessary. But, again...even if it's $1k... you're talking about a $60K+ sale. What's $1K for the peace of mind and books in your hand? I'm guessing shipping them overnight with insurance and a wire transfer isn't exactly cheap. There's also a much lower risk of them getting lost or damaged. I'm glad it worked out for you but what if he refused to send them? Just sayin.

Cool video. Oh, the auctions... They're a big nope for me as a seller and a big hell yes as a buyer. It's shocking to scout GPA and see even 9.8 Bronze Age newsstands selling for under $50, regardless of the title and most things 9.6 and under going for right around grading costs. It's made the math a little more complicated but, boy, it's worth the time. But the auctions. Man. I feel for your friend. I really do. It's hard to take the hits at any price. Condolences to him and I hope he recovers from it.

I would never ever send my big books to Heritage or any other auction house, especially in the current market. Auctions are hit and miss. They’re really a crapshoot. Also, as up you mention, have to wait months to get paid. You’re better off selling big books privately, or on eBay for a fixed price with a buy it now feature.

Great stuff bro! Yeah, I can’t imagine sending a pricy book off to auction. If had one that I would like to sell, I don’t know what I’d do to get a fair price for it. As a buyer, I’ve gotten a lot of comics for much less than the going rate via auction. I’m sure the sellers were looking to get much more.

To be fair, much bigger social media accounts than yours have ran away with money so this is a tough one. For me, it's about tenure. How long have you been a dealer? At least 20 I hope? If I'm a known long-time collector, I would at least want to do 50-50 with a fairly new dealer. Why should I take all the risks while the dealer doesn't? As for Heritage, the odds of the buyer not paying is probably 1%. Most of the time, they'll probably take it up themselves if that were to happen. Furthermore, if you are a big collector, you get very favorable rates speaking from experience.

You have to do the math and understand the market. Heritage has its uses as they reach some people that don't do ebay. My biggest problem with them is the inability to set a reserve. There ate a number of sites that charge a fixed percentage and it's a buy it now type thing and I would suggest that for stuff at certain price points thst it's the way to go.

One of my biggest shocks when I started selling books was the amount of people who bid on my books and didn't pay. The thought of becoming a delinquent bidder never crossed my mind as a possibility when I started and my 2nd ever transaction a few years ago (among many others to follow) was someone who pulled that. I've also learned that it is incredibly hard to predict what international shipping is going to cost on the sellers end (price predictors I used from USPS and other sources were astoundingly inaccurate) and had to stop my international shipping b/c too many books fell red in my ledger.
