oh man! I've done boiling over the concrete block evaporator for 5 years now, and I love the big pan setup. But MAN! I feel so bad about that over boil, I know how precious that stuff is after hours of boiling!

Just a thought, Todd… how about pounding in some long rebar inside your cinder block chimney? That might prevent the wind from toppling it over again. Also, it might prevent it from toppling over in the OTHER direction! It would suck, if the blocks were to topple over, onto your new pans, and damage them.😔😰 Just an idea I thought of, while watching this video.

That is an awesome setup I like the full decider idea. If done right you could almost have a valve at the end that drains finished off

I went the cinder block route my very first year doing syrup after watching your videos about 3 years ago. This year I made a barrel stove evaporator which worked great. Sorry about the lost batch! Would have been nice if you could have come back to a cooled firebox and “almost” syrup in the pan instead of the burnt sugar crust!

What about using the oblong chimney flough pipes that are made out of Terracotta?

I think you need a stove pipe. But otherwise, very cool. Bummer on the lost batch.

I was in your shoes about 3 years ago. I tried to see "what" I could do with a super simple setup. Did OK, and boiled about 4 gallons of finished syrup, but it took me FOREVER to boil it out. There is a TON of science behind making syrup. Its more than just boiling the water out. Its about heat contact, air flow, stack temperature, wood and most importantly your setup. I just spent 2 full days at a maple syrup course and learned more than I could have ever hoped for. I found that the size of the wood I was burning was way too large for my setup, it isn,t dry enough, and I was not maintaining the correct sap depth in my flat bottom pan. It was taking me 12 hours to boil my 45 gallons to make my 1 gallon. Not efficient at all. My set up was the filing cabinet system using 2 pans and a drip flow. Idea was used from Gardenfork, he has a video here on youtube. It was easy, and fun to build. It is nice to see, that you are willing to post the video of the mistake and what can happen when you leave your boil alone.

I have a question about your soil mix. Have you grown potatoes in it and if so, what were the results? Trying to grow basic sustainable foods like carrots potatoes corn green beans and purple hulls. Been successful with all but potatoes in my relatively small backyard. Thank you

Dang that is depressing! That happened to me once so far in my syrup making time and it's so frustrating! Also so hard to clean those plans out after that happens! I'll be looking forward to the next video!

I would extend the length of your firebox as you mentioned ,,,also , if you can place a few blocks inside , towards the rear of the box without blocking off the chimney flue (maybe raise that as well) , that will force the draft (fire) up closer to the bottom of the pan ...just a bit more efficient... my thoughts...

Thank you for showing what can go wrong. 🤓👍 Did you get the 36" or the 48" pan?

Well, you said you learned, I think you kind of didn't, really. Oh well, lots more trees in the forest. But I have to say I do miss you fooling around with that boat trying to tap trees back on the farm. lol

That would definitely help the process out here. Right now we just use a giant pot on the electric stove. Since we put in a wood stove this year we'll be using that next time for at least some energy savings.

I love that you share the good, bad and ugly. I also like that pan you got. I’m in NW MI and it’s my second season of maple syrup. I increased my taps to 15 this year.

It depends on the sugar content of the sap you are collecting. Sugar maples tend to have a higher content than silvers. The silvers that I am tapping this year are closer to 55 gallons sap to 1 gallon of syrup.

This is my second year making syrup. My first batch this year took 53 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. That not bad considering I don’t know what type of maples I tapped. The two best trees are Suger maples at 50:1, red maples at 60:1

Thats Too bad about your syrup loss. When you build something and it works so good it over achieves I say" it was a bit past perfect."
