Thanks John. As a head coach at a small school and being a non thrower, your videos help a lot.

Similar situation here! I coach at a small school and all three of the coaches were distance runners. I threw discus and jav in one meet my freshman year of high school, 20 years ago..so I got volunteered for throws. With your videos I feel like I’m better able to do right by my students. Thank you!

3rd that. My daughter throws at a very small school. No dedicated coach, no real knowledge other than myself and KZitem. She's been steadily improving over the years. Now, as a junior, she is looking to take it up a notch so schools will start looking in her direction. She's around 80 ft. atm with the school record at 93 and colleges looking for between 100-120. We'll be paying close attention to these drills and Coach's other videos. Standing Power, Spanish drill, etc.

I just want to say as a throwers coach who didn't have a coach who knew the throws events on high school she still got me to college because she chose to learn things to help me so to the coaches in the comments willing to learn even though they don't have experience you are appreciated fr. It makes a difference in every way to a thrower.

You are the reason why I can now Suddenly do a full spin. I started throwing sophomore year (im a junior now ((highschool))) and I could never do a full spin it just looked like I was hoping from foot to foot. So I stuck with power throw until I worked up to throwing 95 ft, but I’ve been trying my hardest to beat school record before I graduate but I know I can’t do that without spinning. Soooo literally today after saw your video on drills I saw you do your full spin and I thought your ending just looked sooo cool so I decided to try it bc why not. I SUDDENLY WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING WHAT TO DO, WITHOUT LOOKING WHERE I WAS PLACING MY FEET I JUST THREW MYSELF ACROSS THE RING RELEASED IT AND THEN REALIZED I DID ALMOST A PERFECT FULL SPIN. THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE MAKINF MY DREAMS COME TRUE

Hi John! I put 17 feet on to my best throw by watching this video! I threw 94 ft on June 10th (62 YO, took third) at the Iowa Senior Games and one month later threw 111 ft on July 15th at the Iowa Games on 07/15/2023 (took first). I know these are humbles throws, but I have always wanted to learn the technique! You made it clear for me. I look forward to improving. Thank you!

gosh ......i agree with the comments. You'd laugh if I told you my journey in learning the throw back in the day. If any young thrower is not utilizing your coaching, they are surely not maximizing the greatness that is available via the internet today. I got a dumb old guy technical question and I'd like to hear your thoughts on the topic if you would entertain the fact. But talk about the your perspective on the value or lack there of in the distribution of the weight in the actual discuss. What i mean is there are disc's with weight in the center and ones with weight in the ring. I know the more advanced a thrower gets, the more snap and spin they achieve the better they will do with a ring weighted disc. But highschool/beginners tend to have a center weighted disc. If someone is new to middle to advanced what are your thoughts on the where, what how and when someone moves from a center weighted disc to a ring weighted disc? and I apologize in advance for my "wish I was still in the game", old guy, really admire ya, a bit jealous, arm chair quarterback just wanna bs about a sport I love and made me what i am today question.. :-)

Hello John. Thanks for these 8 drills to break down and develop the entire throw. Just what I was looking for. However, what about step 9, the land and recovery from the full throw with the right foot replacing the position of the left foot and the wind down?

These drills are great. My question - what is the exit criterion for each drill? Does completion of each step mean you can now throw farther than with the previous drill?

Just make sure when you are taking the first step that your body weight is over your foot. If your weight is over your foot you will be balanced and turning actually becomes very easy. You got this! 💪

Thanks Johhny! I wear #Rehband knee sleeves. I've tried the 3mm, 5mm, and the 7mm. They are all great. The thicker you go the more support they offer. I definitely recommend wearing them. They are what keep me going at 35 years old!

Hey, John I'm about to go in to my 10th grade throwing 130 at the end of my throw i jump in to my revised. Do you have any advice to stay grounded
@johnbowmandiscus
Жыл бұрын
Hey man, 130 is pretty far! Well done! As for jumping at the end, it's probably somewhat of a habit and somewhat poor technique. Try doing some non reverse throws working to stand on the ground all the way until you let go of the discus. It will feel weird at first but just keep doing it. This will start to teach you how to stay on the ground until you release the discus. Also, jumping off the ground at the finish is not the worst thing to do. As you work on your technique keep trying to throw with tension and turn on your feet well.
