FINALLY - I've waited seven YEARS to be taught HOW to use my legs in the shotput. All the videos SAY that the power comes from the legs but they don't EXPLAIN and SHOW EXACTLY how to achieve it. I'm 76 and like to compete in the NY Senior Games. But, for the past seven years I've made no progress in throwing the shot or discus in spite of increases in my weightlifting workouts. Reminds me of a boxer. It doesn't matter how strong or how big your muscles are if you don't know how to throw a punch with proper technique and snap then you won't be able to KO your opponent. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the step by step breakdown and demonstration. I can't wait to get outdoors or in front of a mirror and start working on my (your) technique.

How are you doing in the senior games now?
@STBRetired1
Жыл бұрын
@@Timmy-GrandCross The Senior Games were cancelled for a year or two because of COVID. But that gave me time to relax and "feel" my body and my right shoulder was in constant aching pain. I'd never noticed that before. I think my mind to do better was stronger than what my body (shoulder joint) could stand. So I've stopped with the shotput and discus and now do a more balanced exercise program of light weights and gymnastics. A high bar is a great device for showing you where your weaknesses are. I used to be able to do pullovers and skin the cats so easily - 60 years ago. Now to get a good workout for pullups, I need to add some assistance with my legs. When I think of how fast gains came when I was 20 compared to how long it takes to get any gains at 79. It's disheartening but continuing to workout is better than not working out at all. The sooner I stop working out the sooner I have to face the Lord for Judgement. Might be better to put that off for as long as I can.

I'm very new to all this and was wondering how much time a person should rest between throws. I sneaked onto the ISU track today to prep for an upcoming games there in a couple of weeks. I started taking more time between throws and managed to hit an unofficial PR. It then occurred to me that my previous PR came at the first games at which I ever competed a few weeks ago, and that it may precisely be because I had to wait about 5 minutes between throws. But if I'm training I can't really just take all that time, so I was wondering if there's a minimum you want to rest before taking that next throw. In the between time I guess I can take selfies and make duck faces or something.
@johnbowmandiscus
2 жыл бұрын
Great question! You are certainly on to something about waiting more time between throws. For shot put, I think it would be reasonable to throw with 2 shot puts during a practice. Throw them both, one after the other then wait 2 to 3 minutes for your next set. I would suggest taking between 20-40 throws each practice depending on how you are feeling.
@AJHart-eg1ys
2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbowmandiscus Thank you for the information. I think I probably throw about 30-40 times each time out (that "one last good one" usually adds about 5). I stopped counting after the first few times out. I do about 4 reps each in the first couple of positions in the vid, but realize I don't have my hips under me enough to back to the drawing board on that. I think I'm trying to load up like a spring, rather than using the rotation. Then I move on to gliding. I only have my one shot with which to throw, so maybe I'll do 2 throws at the pace I currently do them (the second one within seconds of returning with the shot from the first throw), then wait a couple of minutes before the next pair. I'm still getting over the psychological hurdle of fearing putting too much weight forward, risking scratching, since I'm not yet at the point where I know I can get X distance with just one throw. And the games I've been at and am about to compete in only allow 3-4 throws. I do spin a bit at the end on occasion, then think, "Ooh! WTF did I just do so I can replicate it?" But I generally have no idea. Also getting used to the concept of not being afraid to put some more air under it. I think I'm treating the release as the disease, rather than the symptom, trying to fine tune that angle when maybe it's just an indicator that I really don't have the other things put together. Fixing those may fix the angle. Take care!

Excellent video. Can I ask what sort of distances one would expect (as a percentage of PB) to achieve when doing the 3 drills - punchout, half stand, full stand? I am totally new to shot put so I have no PB. I'm just trying to get a gauge as to how far I might be able to throw eventually using the glide technique. As an example, if I can throw 5m punchouts (as a 50+ male), what distances would you expect to be getting for half stand drill, full stand drill, and all-out glide?
