I've been using a strap for pulling my legs up but can only pull them to a ninety degrees angle and no further. I'm hoping to make progress on this and my ambition is to pull the to my shoulders but that seems to be a long way off. I have been inflexible all my life. and it shows when stretching my legs. What will it take to make progress? I should mention that I am 62 and have been inflexible all my life.

Thank you for your comment John 🤗I hear you on this one! I couldn't actually get my leg to ninety degrees when I started but I decided to be ambitious like you and try to get my leg to my shoulders. It's GREAT that you have this goal - I'm so happy you're 62 and taking on this challenge! I would start by identifying which areas of your body are most stiff for you. Work on that and the surrounding muscles! For this hamstring stretch with a strap, you can try using a door frame and put your leg on that, it's less tiring on the hands especially if you hold it for long :). Other tips would be to tune into your body.... how you breathe, how the stretches feel for you today, notice how the stretches change the more you do them/the longer you hold them, find just the right amount of 'mild discomfort' without pushing yourself, 'sink' into each stretch with each exhale etc. So much of flexibility... is training your mind to open up to the possibility of movement beyond what you ever thought you could do. It takes time and intention. Stretch one day at a time, whenever you get the chance to and hopefully your body will learn to love it! At least, that's what happened for me!

Happy FRIDAY! Here's a new Beginner Hamstring stretch routine! 💕 [EDIT: Happy DAY 3 - highly recommend using a yoga strap OR towel for these stretches!! Don't worry if your legs don't get to 90 degrees, mine were not close to 90 degrees when I started stretching - that's what a strap is for ;)! Let me know how you're feeling after Day 3!! 🤗]

After following this video my physio told me my hamstrings felt the best she's said they've been. Have now been doing this every night and will watch more of your videos! I've already had lower back surgery (disc replacement) and hip surgery to repair a torn labrum. I haven't taken as much pain medication thanks to this video ❤

Man I’ve gotten so out of whack with stretching and exercise lately! I hurt my back really easily so I’m always trying to be cautious about it but these straps seem really easy to control and I’m sure I don’t have to go to the point that I hurt myself but I’ve never thought about using straps! These stretches motivate me to try and get more flexible. I also really want to get a yoga strap now to help me. The long towel is a great alternative. I have faith that if I do this on a regular basis my leg will be able to touch my body too lol also your voice is so soothing and calming perfect for soft stretches ❤️🤗

I got my yoga mat from a brand called Gaiam I like it, it's 4mm one - you'll need to double-up sometimes for stretches that rely more on the knees (I use yoga mat + knee pads for splits!) I've used mats at the gym, black shiny material though I find those are more slippery. 🙏🙏 Great video idea! I'll note it down 😊

My hamstrings are on fire! 🔥 (in a good way) at 8:00 when you add the side stretch and rest on your elbow, is it okay to rest your elbow on your calf instead? I had injuries to both shoulders and flexibility there is limited- for now!

hi!! haha thank you so much!! 💖I think its normal for your legs to shake when you are going past your normal range of motion (and not experiencing any pain)! I'm not an expert, but I would try stretching hamstrings less frequently, maybe every other day if you are just starting and see how that goes :). Notice if your leg shakes every time or not. It may also be dehydration or tiredness, I know after leg workouts my legs will shake so much I stretch! If it keeps shaking, maybe try to go less intense ~ be gentle~ make sure that you are also stretching and strengthening other parts of your legs. These should help with the shaking over time 💕 Hope this answers your question! 😄

Elaine, do you have any advice if you cannot get a forward tilting pelvis? Even pulling the flesh of my butt backwards, my pelvis does not tilt forward at all so it's hard for me to get the right form to do any of the seated forward bending stretches properly. For example, getting my elbow to the ground, or keeping my back straight for the forward bend. If you have any advice it would be so helpful!! Thank you!

When I tried seriously with flexibility last year it was this problem that put me off the entire attempt. It especially caused me problems trying to get anywhere near a pancake stretch for obvious reasons

When I do the stretches without the strap, I feel it in my lower back. Not my hamstrings. I’m suffering from sciatica too. I’m 71. And do some yoga daily. I walk half a mile 4 times a week

Oof, I’m sore 🥵!! This one was the most difficult for me!! How can you drag your leg this far crazy?

Hhahaha omg! I get sore from stretching too, it's a bit crazy haha. That just means you're putting your muscles to work~ Make sure to only go until you feel a mild discomfort and deepen the stretch once your body has relaxed! It took months to years of practice for me to get my leg here, I started at under 90 degrees! Thanks for stretching along 🤗

So, when I'm using the strap, about halfway through, I start to lose feeling in my legs. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

This seems normal if there's no pain. I would try the same stretch with a wall next time and seeing how this feels. Have you foot flexed and contract by kicking a bit towards the wall - your other leg can be in a bent position, for a demo you can search "Supine Hamstrings Stretch"!

I feel like my biggest challenge is keeping my legs straight😞 maybe too much sitting in front of the computer

Tight hammies are so common! Just do your best using a strap :) your body will be your guide for how far to go. It took me months and years to get my legs straight without discomfort. Slow but worth it! Hope you're enjoying the challenge ❤️
