Ring up the club contact and ask questions, clubs are falling over themselves to get people racing. You will get all the advice you need. Or if the phone is not your thing, turn up and watch a race and ask the same questions. Don't worry about your fitness, there are enough grades to match your pace. If you want to go masters racing in South Eastern Melbourne, message me and I can help you. Plugging my club, Southern Masters Cycling Club :)

Great vid.. My top 5+. 1/ Join a club! You cannot race without a licence, and it supports cycling. 2/ Racing is hard.. your first race surpass all previous efforts, both mentally and physically 3/ Everyone starts in D or the lowest grade on the day, expect to progress a grade per season unless you podium (3+) or/and your club pushes you up 4/ Pinning a number on your jersey is best done by talking it off i.e. stretch over your knees or something, and don't pin over the top of the pockets 5/ Learn to know what you're good at e.g. breakaways, sprinting etc. 6/ No-one will talk at the start, but everyone talks at the end! The race just sorts you out, friends, foes and endorphins. 7/ The sock game is real!

Hi James, this is not correct. We manage more events in South East QLD than any other platform, likewise we run a lot of events in Northern Territory. Buncheur has been white labelled for use by other governing bodies to facilitate their members activities. The system is free for use and is typically driven by clubs who for range of reasons prefer the system. Just about every club that uses the system has their own reason for doing so. Some it is the automation, some it is the fact it is free.... I point this out only because it is the volunteers at clubs choosing to use the system, not a “State”
@wubble666
4 жыл бұрын
@@prismbuncheur9792 fair enough. My experience has primarily been with how we operate in the ACT and the races I have done in Vic, SA and NSW and they have all been via EntryBoss
@wubble666

@@ChrisMillerCycling not really all that surprising. Unless a the primary governing body (pity we don't have one) coordinates and manages a defined system they each state/territory is likely to go its own way.
@prismbuncheur9792

James Jordan an interesting thought. However, we have clubs all over the country that for a range of really valid reasons need to use a system of their choice, including paper and pencil. We believe “hub and spoke” strategy that gives volunteers greater choice and flexibility and creates competition to reduce prices for systems is a great model.

Great post Chris. I’ve never raced before but would love the adrenaline rush I think! I’d be curious to know how you should plan your recovery after a race. Should you expect to write the next day off on the sofa or try and do a recovery ride? Also, what nutrition you should look at? Basically, how knackered should you expect to be!

Minimum fitness for first race?
@SamJarrett12

There's no real easy way to answer this, other than to say just go for it! Almost everyone's first race comes as a shock to the system, and most people will get dropped. But the more you race, the more fitness you'll gain and over time it will become more fun to do

The unfitter the better, (as long as you are honest to registration desk/club handicapper) you end up in a slower grade when you can learn more from the older guys racing.
@ChrisMillerCycling

Thanks for answering that guys, totally agree, no minimum fitness ... fun fact, it doesn’t matter how fit you are, it still hurts ... you just go faster and race higher grades ... but the pain (and snotty nose in my case) remain the same 👃🏼🚀

Same age as me when I start racing after only commuting to work a couple days a week (OK it was 40km each way). You don't need any training to start racing, the unfitter the better, (as long as you are honest to club handicapper) you end up in a slower grade when you can learn more from the older guys racing. Though if you can would suggest getting in a few bunch rides (club, shop or mates) to learn group riding skills, not necessary, I didn't but it made the learning curve steeper.
