I respect Ed Calderon for his service and speaking out. This may come off as cold, but I think Ed Calderon's story is a good example of the unintended consequences of governments. I also think this is a good example why the US shouldn't provide funding or training for foreign militaries, paramilitaries, or police forces; maybe with the exception being a declared state of war. I understand that hindsight is 20/20. However, as Ed Calderon stated, a lot of Mexicans got some good training from the US military and OGA then later worked for the cartels using our own training against us.

The original zeta founders were Mexican army sf units trained at the infamous school of the Americas. It was originally set up to help train and and advise latin American military officials in counter insurgency against left wing guerrilla groups. Because as you remember the cuban revolution scared American foriegn policy in the region. The death squads in central america the dictatorships in south America etc

But also if you remember the Civil wars in central America el salvador, Guatemala, nicaragua. The carter and reagan administration's bankrolled the militaries in that region to fight against their guerrilla forces. Especially in el salvador

The CIA helped advise the Bolivian army in tracking down and killing che guevara in 67. The Argentine revolutionary that fought with castro in the revolution. And not to mention the funding of the contras by reagan so we have a long complex history in Latin America in regards to the Monroe doctrine and the cold war.
