Souness in particular seems to have missed two things. Firstly, changing rooms are now multicultural and more so the higher the division. Some cultures accept being shouted at by the manager. Other cultures do not. Some cultures see the leadership model as one person dictating orders. Other cultures see a more collaborative approach. Secondly ... the leader is now the coach. Souness often talks about the lack of coaching he received at Liverpool. He was just expected to go out and play to his best ability. It helped that all British teams played 4-4-2. Nowadays the leader is the coach who micro-manages every player's game. Each player is effectively his or her own leader. With the larger squads any player who fails to follow the coach's instructions is out. That was not the case when Liverpool won the league with a squad of 14 players. Any assessment of England's performances must be made with an understanding of what the players experience at club level, for most of them a level above international football. If the English manager fails to prepare a team to the standards experienced at club level, this will show in the England players' performances.

You will get a manager in the future who has the Fergie level of control, but firstly the power has to be taken back from the players and agents, right now even owners can be forced out, only players cant be sacked and that must change, only in football and such sports do we have employees that can't be sacked when they consistently underperform, with that degree of power imbalance football is worse than ever for fans, as Graeme said too many teams have players who could not care less if the team wins or loses.

Being a captain/leader on a football pitch is pretty straight forward. You lead by example. How you train, play and behave. It’s not like cricket or rugby, where there are difficult and continuous tactical decisions to be made. Being given the armband is honorific. If we’re talking about England, we all know where the problems began and ended elsewhere.
@jonathanlynch5031

'It’s not like cricket or rugby, where there are difficult and continuous tactical decisions to be made.' There are, they just aren't made by captains anymore. Used to be you'd have an onfield general. Imagine if Rice, Kane, Stones took it upon themselves to go 'we're playing at too low a tempo with no width', and were able to communicate that. All I ever saw was frustration with no onfield leadership. But, I put that largely down to complete, inexplicable acquiescence to Southgates supreme leadership, and the resulting demoralisation. Mentally weak, and not willing to risk offending the higher ups by making their own decisions.
