I did this with a 3d printed tool. It was powered by a cheap Chinese press but I'm sure you could adapt the screw down method. The tool is surprisingly strong and regular PLA + was used because of how strong it is. It is a bit brittle because it is one of the hardest plastics. It won't deform if printed correctly but eventually will break. You could probably make a few of these before that happens. Very precise. There are some videos of the process on here.

If you’re planning on doing more of these I would suggest making a screw powered press. I’m going to refer to the round bar as a mandrel and the flat plate you were hammering on as a transfer plate. I would recommend welding some guides onto the mandrel so that the transfer plate can stand up at a 90° angle without you holding it and then with a simple screw powered press that you could easily make from some all-thread and a couple of appropriately sized nuts welded at the top of an “n” shaped frame. That way you might be able to crank on one single screw instead of the two. And you could even use the two holes you already drilled into the mandrel for guide rods.

Great video What is the width of the jig you made? The distance between the 2 pieces of angle? And what size is the metal rod ? Thanks

I use a propane/MAPP torch to heat up the metal at the center to make it easier to fold. I can apply more heat as it’s folding by heating up the pipe/rod as we see in this video but only until it’s past the halfway point. Once done, I heat it up in the folded position with C clamps on each end then plunge the receiver in a bucket of water to set the temper. We’re doing something similar when we anneal brass casings for reloading.

I believe he may have had less problems if the rod was cleaned off/ wire wheeled to get the rust scale off first. Then he wouldn't have had trouble getting it out. Especially if he had some roll punches to knock the bolts out. Even with that he did a good job using scrap iron for a jig. However he should have been using C clamps and brass hammers at the end. In my opinion, that's all. I would like to see what his tolerances were in the end and if he had a problem with the carrier or bolt binding up or showing unusual wear after being fired multiple times which would have shown misalignment of his receiver. Overall a good video though of someone making do with what he had on hand rather than paying someone else to do the same thing.

Have you tried using threaded rod rather than changing out to shorter bolts. Could also try and make spacers so you only use the long bolt if threaded rod isn't strong enough.

you can use a 20mm the point is to not over crank it. when you bend it together the tabs on the bottom cannot be over lapping like that 🤣 get it bent so its maybe 1/8" minimum at its natural state, then get 3 c clamps, your bolt, trunnion and magazine and use those as spacers. i only know this because of trial and error as well as being a tig welder/ sheet metal worker for the better part of a decade, also keep in mind that after you weld it its gonna shrink even more, depending on how good of a welder you are and if you know what a heat sink is, this is certainly not a stick welding job. I know I'm 3 month late but I hope this helps.

What does the channel measurement need to be between your angle iron pieces?
@jimmy_jack
Жыл бұрын
The rod was 3/4" so it should be your rod plus 1/8th for the thickness of your receiver. So about 7/8ths I think. But I never really measured mine I just set the rod in and added 2 1/16th plates between the channels
