Alfred Hitchcock had conceived the shower scene in Psycho without musical accompaniment. However, Berard Herrmann was able to convince the director that his music could reinforce the expressiveness of the moving image, today inconceivable without this sound accompaniment. Herrmann, author of soundtracks such as Citizen Kane, Fahrenheit 451 or Taxi Driver, used string instruments here to convey "the sound of pure ice".
