As a retired IT guy, my favorite dumbest user story was someone called saying their terminal (pre-PC days) wasn't working. After the usual obvious problem questions, I asked them to make sure it was plugged in...she said it was hard to see under her desk because the power was off in her building. After I said nothing for about 30 seconds, I hear this "Oh for F sake" and she hung up.

Had a similar call but they were on a laptop but couldn't connect to the wireless as that AP was not on a battery or the genset. Come to find out the contractors hired to layout the APs plugged less than half of the APs into the right circuits covered by the genset. Sent the nurse an email months later telling how she helped justifying upgrading the genset for the building not just for the staff but for the residents as well. They swapped in a higher rating unit to cover the entire building and outlying mechanical shack. Onsite maintenance guys loved that as well.

I had done my job and prepped for Sunday and Monday, but Tuesday it was chaos at the station. But they do. Unless you are getting fired for shit performance or something, in which case you probably had ample warning what was going to happen eventually, most places i have ever seen is a person is just getting let go as redundant or whatever, they will warn them with ample time, and/or pay them their last two weeks. Most places know it's bad policy to just walk up to a permanent employee and say "thanks for your hard work, but you need to leave now, we don't need you any more, good luck with that rent next month". If you are getting fired for doing a bad job, they don't owe to shit, they have probably been paying you to do basically nothing for months. Likewise if you are quitting a terrible employer you can feel free to not do the favor for them. Although it seems to be i that the kind of people who bring things like that up are just the ones who are permanently convinced they aren't treated well enough at any job and that nothing is their fault. I would do it even just because it is hard on my coworkers to have to try to make do without me until a real replacement can be found. But you probably also think your coworkers are all assholes and hate all of them too, right? But its definitely nothing wrong with you.

Tyler..... since you play golf and have a toddler... I thought I'd share this story with you about my son who was about 4 years old at the time (he's 33 now). My parents were renting a house here in Florence, SC that had a golf course near their back yard, and after supper, my dad liked to take his grandson for a walk on the path for the golf carts. One evening, while on their walk, my dad had my son on his shoulders as he always did, and a few guys were still on the golf course, so the guy yelled out "FORE!!" loud enough so my dad would hear him before he hit the ball. Since my son was in preschool and had already learned how to count, he decided to help the guy out with the next number.... so he yelled back "FIVE!!!!" as loud as he could ..... just as he was getting ready to hit the ball. Needless to say, my dad said the guy fell to his knees and he and his buddies all started laughing!! Not something you'd expect to hear on a golf course.... I'm sure that story was told many times at the bar in the club house! I'm sure you will have many funny stories of things your daughter has done and I'm sure will do for the many years to come.... write them down in a journal (you and/or your wife), so that when she gets married and announces she is pregnant, give her the journal as a gift at the baby shower and share some of the stories with the guests, then give her a new journal so that she can carry on a new tradition. We can't get everything they do on video.... but the stories about them growing up in a journal will be treasured for years to come!

To the younger generation. A two-week notice, is what us old timers call, being courteous. You see, when you get a job, no matter what it is, you do your best. You're thankful to have had that job, and respect the owner of the company, and know that if it weren't for them, you'd be living in the streets, holding up a "FEED ME!" sign. When you find another job, out of respect for the company you're leaving, you give them two weeks, to replace you. Some companies may not need it, which relieves you from that responsibility. Even if the company is a less than desirable place to work, it got you through, and you should be thankful that it was there when you needed it...

@@random2829 It truly is sad, and a sign of our times. Instead of being thankful, this new generation hates their job, no matter what it is. I remember when I was a teen, I got a job at McDonalds, and was blown away, when I got my first paycheck! Nowadays, kids are angry, that McDonalds isn't paying them $30 an hour. While many places like McDonalds , has raised their pay to $15 an hour, now those same people who screamed "RAISE THE WAGE!!!" Are now blubbering over $9 Big Mac's... There's no pleasing the kids of today...

He had a Excel spread sheet on his PC he's been putting data into for 2 years, this one spread sheet covered everything he's done in the two years he's been there, had internal memos, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly reports, raw data, correspondences with outside firms & companies, all on one single sheet, the file hadn't been named yet because it was never saved. He was one of our top Executives. ...auto-save was turned off in his Excel. Think he lost his job when his building lost power during a afternoon summer thunderstorm. I (raised catholic, only ever read the New Testament in school, and usually in a modern translation, but always an avid reader and relatively well-educated), had a jewish girlfriend once and went to Seder dinner with her family for the first time. We went around the table reading from the book of Exodus and when it was my turn I encountered the word “paschal” for the first time in my twenty-something years. I had no idea how to pronounce that. I came up with “pashal” instead of “pascal” and despite breaking up with her and not seeing her in over 25 years it still comes to mind.

After the IT guy segment I have to tell a Zeducation story. I was working in IT and had a user call in to tell me his keyboard stopped working. While on the phone, I asked him if he had spilled anything in the keyboard, he said no. So thinking it was an issue with the keyboard plug, which happened a lot with Macintosh computers back in the day, I went out to his desk. When I pulled the keyboard tray out to look at the keyboard, water sloshed out of the keyboard and into the tray. Of course I slid the chair back afraid that there was so much that it was going to get on me. So I had to go back into the tech room and bring out another keyboard. So I get why IT guys can act that way sometimes.

I'm an electrical engineer and a self-taught computer expert. I would always tell the IT people to skip the first 20 or so suggestions because I had already done them. It didn't stop them from asking them anyway but it did give me the opportunity to say repeatedly, "I did that." After about the 20th question, I would snarkily say, "Are you now ready to help fix my problem???" Every single damn time it came down to them saying, "Yeah, we're going to have to rebuild your computer. Leave it here and come back in two days." Recycle the power was my go-to solution to most of the electronic problems that were posed to me, too.
