I can’t wait for the Dave-Graham collaboration video! I’m here because of Graham and agree with him on 99% of his financial philosophies, *except* annual fees. To me, those fees are instantly anxiety producing - having to remember to do whatever it is each year to make sure I’m getting that value back. No thanks, I like stress-free $0 annual fee cards instead. 🙄🤷♀️
@eowendyl
4 жыл бұрын
Agreed partially. I think the philosophy that Graham+Seb+Shifu are running is that yes, the perks add up to more than the annual fee, but it's a VERY important point that what has value may not have the same value to you. Shifu at least has his "only 1 high tier af card per person" restriction, so the perks don't overlap like they otherwise would.

Agree with your analysis for the most part other than the worth of the hotel statuses and Sachs credit . But as it always is... it’s a your mileage may vary. Would value Marriott gold at $0 with the changes to the program earlier this year and Hilton gold at ~$30 as I stay probably 3-5 nights at a Hilton and value the free breakfast at $7-8 a time and the slightly higher earning level. Would value the Sachs credit at $30 as would definitely replace at least one gift a year I would buy at approx that value.
@eowendyl

I Agree with your No Annual fee logic. I, too, do Not have credit cards with annual fees (9 credit cards in total). Plus, I prefer cash over points anyday. For travel, I use the Bank Of America Business Advantage Cash Rewards MasterCard. For one, it’s a no annual fee, and you can change category choices each month. It gives you 3 percent on travel and other categories each month by activation, as well as it’s a MasterCard which is accepted everywhere. No foreign transaction fees (to my knowledge), and a 25% boost if you qualify for the preferred rewards customer. Clear Winner for me!

I think with the Hilton Gold status you can get Wyndham Elite, which gets you the Caesars Diamond status at a Caesars resorts which entitles you to completely free rooms, and room upgrades no resort fees, and priority check ins, and priority line cutting at most things at Caesars properties world wide. Caesars Diamond gets you MGM Gold, which gets the same thing at MGM resorts. Which means a weekend in Vegas is quite literally free except food.

I am in my early 50's and have been in the credit card game for over 30 years now and the bottom line is..........wait for it........credit cards are a ruthless business, yes I said it. It is about MONEY, MONEY and more money. The % rates kick you in the shorts constantly so why would you pay an annual fee on top of all the extra money you pay monthly? I agree with you Mr. Hanson, NO annual fee or LOW annual fee coupled with the lowest interest rates I can qualify for is my objective. There is no need for all those so-called perks if you get no annual fee with a low % rate. Your content is awesome thanks for your information.

Makes sense to me, and totally agree. Credit Shifu and Ask Sebby plays the points game to the hilt, sometimes to excess and over the top which the average credit card user won't do. My new favorite credit card channel! (P.S. I do like the AMEX Platinum Card).
@eowendyl

They got a very different approach so it's good to watch them all. Sebby is very mathematical, Shifu is all about getting to fly in business (or better) and Graham wants to do the maximum number of flights. All a great resource. It's good to have his viewpoint, although this video kind of confirms that he's not as extreme about the annual fees as people originally thought. Not only has he had them in the past, but he still holds a hotel card (as he should), and now this, just because it provides value. So, a slight "controversial marketing" thingy initially, perhaps? :)

The AMEX travel cards with airline credit... If you pick Southwest, you automatically get credits for the government fees on points flights. More importantly, you can purchase a Southwest gift card directly from Southwest online and get the full credit. I have the Hilton Aspire AMEX. As long as you use the $250 annual Hilton Resort credit, the fee is worth it for that one. Otherwise, the step down is $95... And Gold vs Diamond status doesn't get you much with Hilton's new standby upgrade program essentially eliminating free upgrades for Diamond members. Probably downgrading next year.

It’s especially good if you don’t want to deal with maximizing points. Also don’t you lose out on points when you buy flights through the portals? With a cash back card you get money back on the flight purchase itself so you could treat it as a discount when comparing to the higher fee cards that get discounted flights in portals.

I don't shop at Saks, but for the Saks credits on the AMEX Platinum, I just buy a $50 giftcard in the store every 6 months. Then I sell it for a bit less (cardcash or ebay) and it's like free money. I was actually thinking along similar lines in regards to the Charles Schwab American Express Platinum card and the Wells Fargo Propel card. If I'm going to pay an annual fee it better be because it has a ton of perks that I would pay money for out of pocket. Your getting gold status with both Marriott and Hilton which is legitimately worth $200 and you can only get gold status with Marriott outside of Amex platinum either through a lot of stays or having to pay a $450 annual fee for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card. So why not just get the Platinum card instead and have status at both Marriott and Hilton? You get status with them through the Platinum card, you can then book rooms with them using the Propel card getting cashback while also racking up the hotel points for a free stay later on...seems like a pretty sweet deal overall. It also avoids the whole "YOU ONLY EARN 1 MR POINT BOOKING DIRECTLY WITH HILTON OR MARRIOTT!!!" argument that gets thrown around against the platinum card. In reality outside of booking airfare through it and using Fine Hotels and Resorts it's really just a perk card and that is perfectly fine with me. For everyone thing else just use the no annual fee Wells Fargo Propel card. The Charles Schwab Amex Platinum Card and Wells Fargo Propel Card are not the travel card duo most people would think of but it actually works out well especially if you go the cashback route using that to buy dividend stock that will pay you back for years to come. This avoids the whole devalution problem of points and miles while also allowing you to enjoy the upside of points and miles as well by allowing you to double dip in both points and cashback.

Thanks Jennifer! Appreciate it! Cash back just makes more sense to me. Of course, there’s not as much “KZitemable content” because it is easy to do without complicated point collecting/transferring/redeeming schemes. In my latest video (the one with my “Studio Tour” in the thumbnail) I talk about which cards I’m using for cash back with no foreign transactions fees on my holiday trip to the Bahamas. Just discovered your channel from Graham and I think he's right saying you'll have a ton of subscribers in a short amount of time. One slight suggestion (that I'm probably wrong about anyways and really doesn't matter since the rest of this channel is really good) I think you're misusing the high angle shot (or whatever it is called, the one where the camera is inbetween the wires and you are obviously looking at a different camera). It made a lot of sense in the un-boxing video because you're more watching the act of unboxing instead of receiving the information about it. When being told information it feels almost distant and not the subject of what is going on with that shot instead of the direct face shot (or whatever it's called, I didn't go to school for film). It still has a lot of potential using that shot but it should be more saved for "candid" shots. Anyways cool channel, subscribed.
@HeythereDavehere
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still trying to get a feel for when to use that second angle. I used it here because the video was so long and felt like a little too much of that one camera! Hey Dave! Could you do a video on how to use the Venmo Card and Cash App Card effectively or are they just a complete waste of time? Thanks!

I totally agree with your annual fee statements. Most people are too clouded to recognize the facts.

I prefer the Citi Costco to the Propel. First of all, it is a Visa and accepted way more than Amex worldwide. It is 4% on on Gas, 3% on Travel + Restaurants, 2% Costco (additional 2% if you are Costco Executive member), and 1% everything else. Also, if you book travel through Costco Travel you'll get additional 2% making it 5% for that specific travel purchase which can be flight, hotel or cruise. The card is free with your Costco annual membership, which you have to pay regardless no matter what card you use at Costco. The one and only downside for me is that you have to wait 1 year to get the cashback, but it's not the end of the world. You'll still get it regardless. I am not an Amex Platinum fan. Unless you are spending a TON of money on flights and hotels every year, it makes no sense. You would have to spend so much money to earn MR points. It is mind boggling how Amex did not add a 5x (or worst case 4x) restaurants category to this card. It's common sense. People that travel a lot, eat out a lot. Chase Sapphire Reserve has 3x restaurants, and the Citi Prestige has 5x restaurants. Amex is slacking by not adding a restaurants category bonus to the Platinum card.

Watching this video as #3 of the "Best Finance Videos" playlist. #2 had an almost unbearable 6 minutes of ads at the beginning, but this video started with no ads. But then around the 5:30 mark, there were 2 videos for a total of 1 minute 30 seconds, and then again around the 21:00 mark. I know you don't control the ads. Just thought it was interesting to see how the KZitem gods decide what to show to whom.

Ugh that's so annoying! Are the ads at least skippable? Were they targeted to anything you were actually interested in? I leave ads turned on because before I did that my videos didn't get promoted by KZitem because they don't make any money off of me! Helpful hint: if you watch a lot of KZitem, their "Premium" service is awesome for $12/mo... no ads at all! (Note: creators get a small share of that but I can tell you personally it is a VERY small share... past 30 days my revenue was 96% from ads and 4% from Premium subscribers) THANKS for participating in my little test!

We came up with the same conclusion but chose the Business Platinum for the 35% redemption on air, and the Del credit over Uber/Saks, and 1.5X on purchases over 5K. Not to mention, I can write off the annual fee. With cruising benefits, My value is around $900 for the card.

I am highly interested in seeing your assessments on the new changes with Delta AMEX cards and how to compare their rewards to other cards that you have highly regarded (if it's even possible). Are they worth having for those of us that travel as a family of 4 once or twice per year compared to just using say a cash back rewards card program and using the cash back to pay for flights. At the moment, I have the Business Platinum and thinking about upgrading to the Business Reserve. Thank you for any input / direction. :-)

I'm with you regarding Annual fees. I mean I use debit cards because I don't like debts. No fees, no temptation of spending what I don't have. Then my bank offered me a credit card with an annual fee of course. I was hesitant but I took it because I want to build my credit score. I'm not interested with the "perks" because I think it would only encourage me to spend more which is not my goal, lol and I'm not willing to pay the annual pay because why should I again?? 😆 I was living comfortably with debit cards again with Zero fees. But since it's easy to get the annual fees waived with my bank, then cool. But really the only way I'd be willing to pay high fees is if I'd be using the cards for a business. Because I would probably get more out of it.

This was a much better analysis than your previous video. Almost a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on. I had a couple of minor criticisms, but overall agree. Great production quality.

I have the Citi Prestige card since launch, it has lost some much benefits over the years. Only reason I’m still holding onto it is I have a decent discount on the annual fee which makes it still worth it.

Can you do a video on best cards to take advantage of or what to keep in mind while in the military? The SCRA basically prevents credit cards by law from charging annual fees. Does that mean I should try to apply for all high annual fee cards or are there things to keep in mind such as ability to downgrade when I leave the military?

This is great but the only reason he gets value is because he has over $1,000,000 in assets at Charles Schwab which gives him the $200 credit every year. Without it, he'd be losing money on the card.

I skimmed through this video. I don't give xyz about redemption points and airlines points and the like. I just want assurance that a credit card won't be denied at any point on a trip. That's what's important.

I did a point analysis with my Wells Fargo Propel: paying for hotel with points vs cash back. With the hotel, $33 a night, I was looking at a total cost on Agoda of $195. Cash back for the Propel was 19,500 points or $195 cash back on my card. If I was to book it with my points with Go Far Rewards...it was $53 per night or 5,087 points per night. To book it with points thru Wells Fargo for 5 nights, it would be 25,425 points. In this instance, I chose to the cashback option. I only spent 19,500 points doing cashback vs 25,435 using points to book the hotel. Points are not always the better route to take. Always compare, before booking and use the option where you spend less points. Cashback may only be 1:1, however you may spend less points and still cover most or all of your hotel or airline vs the points option. If you're wondering about the cheap hotel, I'm overseas and taking a trip to Thailand. Hotels are a lot cheaper and real nice too.

one more thing that makes this card better is you can get a gold card for free, which earns lots of points on other categories. And the best part is membership points are shared.
