Hi Chris. I am reading the Ecology of planted aquariums from Diana Walstad and there is a whole section about plants as water puriffiers: "Plants readilly take up amonia which is toxic even though there may be adequate nitrogen in the substrate or nitrates in water. This is because aquatic plants have a decided and overriding preference for amonia."

Plants can use all 3 parts of the nitrogen cycle for food (NH3,NO2,NO3), it takes the least amount of work/energy for plants to use up ammonia. That’s why in some high tech tanks where the pH is low people will use urea based fertilizer like Nilocg thrive+
@ezwaters5847

If given the option, plants uptake ammonia before nitrates. Up taking nitrate is a more energy intensive process for plants then to uptake ammonia.
@Mad_Props
3 жыл бұрын
Aquatic Plants use ammonium and nitrates. There are a couple of studies that have been done that show that at different PH and concentrations plants will absorb different compounds to get the nitrogen they need to grow. Some suggest that at lower PH more ammonium is absorbed whereas at a higher PH nitrification more readily occurs and so plants absorb more nitrates. Also ammonium absorption seems to be light and temperature dependent. This includes constructing wetlands to absorb waste water effluents, and studies on Azolla, Hyacinth, and Water Lettuce.

I wanted to make an aquarium a while back and my mom just told me to use a fishbowl we've had for 10+ years plus for a better fish cause it's enough. It's not the tiny ones you usually find in the videos. She told me that her friends have fish in those small solitary tanks and do fine. Told her that's exactly what dad did and he killed 2 fish in a month. Just today, I finally built my first tank at 54 L. Planning to put in tetras but maybe I'll put something else that are smaller so I can fit more for longer. Thank God I haven't put any fish in cause I probably fucked up not washing my substrate and have the water murky af. Mistakes were made but I gotta start somewhere

Btw Chris, plants prefer ammonia/ammonium over nitrite or nitrate. If I am not mistaken, plants need to convert nitrate back into ammonia before utilizing it. Some high tech tanks dose ammonium (less toxic form of ammonia) as their nitrogen source. This only works as long as the pH is under 7 and/or the plants utilize the ammonium fast enough.

5:04 even silk artificial plants a lot of times have plastic stems with tiny little jagged pieces that your betta's fins WILL find somehow. at least that's how my first betta was (before i faced my fear of real plants). I'd even worry about certain hardscapes when you have bettas with long flowing fins. best to just try out a few kinds of plants, find one or two kinds that thrives in your aquarium and then buy a bunch of those. no need to do a fancy scape or pay 100s of dollars on plants and accessories, but a few natural plants go a LONG way.
