The military is adopting 6.5 because they expect to fight other nations militaries. And body armor is becoming both more common and more capable, so a bigger round is better. That's my reasoning, tho this is just one reason, and I am certain that there are significantly more knowledgeable people that made videos explaining all of them.

Yup, pretty much the logic here... unfortunately it does really account for logistics or the reality most deaths are not caused by infantry weapons, hence the discourse regarding the trials and adoption of the new rifle. Taxpayer funds vs the big bad MIC is a tale as old as time. Military should have probably invested in more artillery production and more/cheaper guided munitions and drones instead, going off what Ukraine has been teaching the US on modern warfare.

I play a lot of CDDA which has a variety of monsters and modern weapons (as well as a lot of Final Fantasy) so I've thought about this a lot. I figure if you have a spectrum of elephant or t-rex sized monsters to dog sized monsters, the best existing guns would be something like an AR-10 or SCAR-H if you aren't expecting much, or an H.C.A.R. or BAR if you want to be a little more secure.

I know you didn't play palworld, because if you did you'd know that the highest single-shot damage weapon (short of the rocket launcher) is a trapdoor rifle slinging exactly the type of big, heavy bullets you'd want for large game.
