Many Nikon DX & Canon APS-C crop sensor shooters have asked for me to review the brand new super wide angle Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD so I brought one into the studio and ran it through it's paces. What lens do you use for wide angle shots?

JCristina , thank you for reply. You come across as a really cool guy and I love the look and sound of your video, it was I just found it painful to listen to listen to all the talk before you actually got to the bit about how the lens actually performs. That is just my opinion and other people may disagree. Please don't let a negative comment put you off though. Good luck with your future work J

Absolutely my friend. I've got thick skin and truly like the negative feedback.. It does help out more than the positive at times, besides for stroking the ego which is good every once in a while. BTW: I enjoyed your Mont Blanc Solo Ascent video besides the background harmonics on my Bose speakers. It was an awesome experience and thank you for sharing! Keep up the good work James.

Great review, ie. it introduced me to what looks like a fantastic lens, and a brand i have always overlooked and would have continued to had I not seen this video. i am cool with painful detail, as it is this detail that gave me the info I needed. JCristina, I think it would have been better to just do your review without commenting on others, because you did contradict yourself in that regard. If you just did the review, it is what it is. Nothing is perfect nor should it be I suppose.

Excellent review. I also own the Tamron 90mm VC macro and it's my favorite portrait lens because of it's sharpness. I love to shoot my kids with it, but the Mrs doesn't like portraits coming out of this lens, because it is very unforgiving for any skin blemishes. Thank you so much for that review. I am a Realtor and sometimes hire a pro for my photos, but inevitably, I wind up taking more shots for better angles that would capture the essence of the home as I see it. I have narrowed it down to this lens or the Tokina ATX-i 11-20 f/2.8 for the lower f-stop. This Tamron is 3.5. In real estate, I need to take sharp images in low light. How do you feel about this?

Good overview. Thanks for the info. Sounds like a very solid lens, especially for photo work. Question for vlogers. Would you say or know how much does it distort the face if you are using it for vloging at arms length. Considering its so wide. Would that be a concern to you? Or its it acceptable. I know its partly personal preference but I'm curious. Also do you prefer telephoto, normal or wide lenses for vloging in studio set up.

I have this lens on my gh5 with a metabones speedbooster XL and I was not as happy with this lens as I thought I would be. I primarily shoot video and you get some very strange distortion on the sides of the frame when you pan during filming. I've also noticed it creates a wobble effect if you go handheld and track a subject moving quickly. It has the same effect as bad warp stabilization and it is fairly frustrating. The camera works great for photos but it is only decently sharp near the edges. I just wanted to warn everyone in case they are buying this lens for video! I'm selling mine now and getting a Rokinon 10mm instead.

That's a shame but great real-world information based on adapting this lens via a Metabones adapter to your GH5. Thanks so much for contributed your thoughts Jacob! Really appreciate you taking the time.

I wonder if the complication is that the XL is for a FF lens and this is an APS-c lens. The image circle of this lens is not big enough to cover the XL. But do you think the wobble effect is from the Tamrons VC or maybe the gh5's IBIS. I am wanting to adapt this to my gh5s which has a larger fov than the gh5 sensor. So I'm hoping this doesnt have any vignetting.

Do you think this is fast enough for star trails, also for landscape on the Nikon D500
@jcristina

+Steve Kunder I of think it would work out for you. Would like a bit fast but with a bump of ISO or a bit more exposure time, you should be fine. Thanks so much Steve for adding to the discussion.

I can't speak from experience as I own neither lens, but from what I've heard, this new Tamron will be the standard for which future APS-C wide angle zooms will be judged. Seems like a pretty glowing review. :-)

Hello I’m confused about using this lens on a canon 80d, I know the lens will fit the camera but I read that the focal length will be different 10-24mm will change to 16-35mm so if I bought the lens I won’t be getting 10 to 24 mm ? And images will be different. Please can you help me with this? Thanks David
@jcristina

I believe Canon’s 80D has a 1.6 crop factor so simply multiply 1.6 by the two numbers and you have the effective focal lengths.
@KPAki1Ler

That equivalent only matters if full frame is taken into consideration. So basically this 10-24mm which is made for apsc crop cameras will be 10-24mm on your apsc 80D, and it's equivalent full frame lens focal range will be similar to 16-35L glass for example.

first off, tanks for good rewives. this is not so mutch a coment ass it is a question. I reseantly upgradet my nikon D70s to a D7200 and "went the extra mile" and got my a Tamron 28-75 F2,8 and i have a 70-300 tamron ...... but .... after the fackt i found out that over half of the pic i have taken up until the change is taken between 18mm - 24mm. I mostly tape pic famaly partys ind dorre, hollydays .... mostly just fun privat stoff.... and latlie the local sports club have asked my to take pic at there events. so my question is wher to go frome her... becaus i miss the span down to the 18 mm ... and money is a big isu ... do i by a 10-24? ore maby by a 17-50 from sigma and try to sell the 28-75 and pray i dont miss the gab from 55-70? ore doo i take a crasy jump and by a 20mm prime and uses that indore

Thanks Rene for the great question. For Gala Events I personally shoot a Quick 50 f1.4 ; 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 Over the past 15+ years that's what I found to be the best for my style of photography on a Full-Frame Body. From a crop, I would use the equivalent to the list lenses focal distance. For runaway I thought in a straight 300mm f4 on one body and the 24-70 f2.8 on the other. I like to get those crisp headshots before walking down the runway and 24-70 as they approach for the full body.

Word of advice, don't state other lens review vids as boring moments before talking about something such as your your personal lack of time in a lens review video. It has nothing to do with the lens. That's worse than boring.
