I guess this question has already been partly answered, but how does it optically compare to Canon's two lenses, the 10-18 & 10-22 - in terms of sharpness/clarity and flare. Is it worth the extra cost? Given the higher price point I would take the better build quality and more useful zoom range as given. Thanks.

The Canon APS-C cameras have a smaller sensor than Nikon, Sony APS-C cameras. The Canon APS-C image sensor has a 1.6X crop factor instead of the common 1.5X crop factor. That is beneficial for telephoto lenses but the wide angle lenses are less wide on Canon APS-C camera bodies. The Sony e-mount 10-18mm for APS-C has a similar characteristic with the Tamron 10-24. Both lenses can be used with full frame lenses with similar vignetting problems. Both have very large image circle.

Great reviews as always. How would you say this compares to other offerings, more specifically the Canon 10-22 or 10-18. I noted you weren't a big fan of the gen 1 lens which didn't score that well in the 8 lens comparison. Has this made up enough of the shortcomings to be a worthy consideration in place of the Canon lenses?
@omarhani
7 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion as an addition to your wonderful review videos. There are several adaptors, such as the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter which will allow APC lenses to work quite well on full frame bodies and negate the vignetting that we usually see when using these lenses on a full frame body. If you could pair one of these inexpensive adapters with these lenses, you'd really set yourself apart in the review video world, and give people an option that's quite 'out of the box' in terms of use of these lenses.
@diegorivera2711
7 жыл бұрын
That would be a good addition. Almost nobody is trying that, only on some forum posts, but hard to find and with old teleconverters. Kenko has a compatibility table of crop lenses with that particular piece of kit. www.kenkoglobal.com/photo/lens_accessories/teleplus/teleplus_hd_dgx_14x_canon.html . I think they don't list 3rd party vendors but may be it is a little gem for FF users with tight budgets.

@@TomalBhattacharjee optically they are comparable. The vc on such a wide angle lens is not really useful for stills. I would even turn it off. For video thats a different story. I would also not worry too much about its focus accuracy compared to the nikon. At such wide angles autofocus accuracy becomes less critical. Often i manual focus to infinity and shoot with that, pretty much everything further away than 0.5m is then in focus. The nikon is deffinitely overpriced for todays standards. However, you can get them for 350-400 dollar in mint condition all day long. I actually recommend neither one of them. I would pick the nikon 12-24 f4 (only pre owned). Better build and image quality.

Chris, I didn't notice this lens until now, and recently I wanted to change my wide angle lens, the 10-22mm from Canon, as it's not seeming as sharp as other lens. How does this compare against the 10-22? The image quality is looking good at wide open for this, but considering I always use small apertures starting from F6.3 on my 10-22, is it worth the extra cash? The VC is tempting, and the IQ lets me to shoot with this indoors with a larger aperture. Yet the lens barrel moves as I see, so will it let in dust? Distortion seems similar, so it's hard to choose. Does it have any focusing issues like art lens? I'll wait for the opinion of yours to decide.

I was waiting for you to review this lens before I decide on an UWA lens!. It was a toss up between this and the Tokina 11-20. What do you think?
@znbh
7 жыл бұрын
Tokina. almost the same zoom range, only $100 more for f/2.8 all the way through. You won't really need 10mm, and chances are, if you're using that focal length, you can afford to step back a foot or so. Also, AF is a lot quieter, so its better for video, and if you use an external microphone atop your camera or a sound recorder away from your camera, focusing will be dead silent. If money is no problem, then the Tokina 11-20 is the clear choice over the tamron 10-24

What's your personal thoughts on this vs. the Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 and the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5? The variable aperture is a pain. But then again...it's really not so bad. It seems like the Tokina lens is definitely sharper, but this lens seems to do better than both on barrel distortion, as well as matching the Sigma 10-20 pretty well on some other optics.
@diegorivera2711
7 жыл бұрын
Tyler Mason I own the Tokina. It's an excellent lens, but has a lot of chromatic aberrations outside the center, the focus motor sounds like a lens from the 80s, and the MF clutch is barely usable. This Tamron looks way better. At this wide angles you won't get small DoF with big apertures, it's just for the light transfer. So in my opinion Is preferable to compensate aperture with IS and get better IQ. At the time I bought the Tokina I could not get a copy of the Canon 10-18, that would be my choice today. This tamron looks a little better that the plasticky Canon in every aspect, but I don't know if the price difference justifies it.

Not sure about using the 750D with them, but I've recently been doing a bunch of research on them and currently own the Canon 10-18. I'm new to photography, but the 10-24 range on the Tamron seems to be a huge draw. Image quality is similar on both, but slightly better on the Tamron. Video autofocus is the main separation for most people. The Canon is completely silent (although a little slower) in video autofocus. Tamron is a bit noisy, so I guess it depends on what you'll mainly be using it for. Tamron is f/3.5-4.5 vs the Canon's f/4.5-5.5. The next consideration is the price difference... the Tamron is almost twice as much. $260 vs $499.
@encellon

This Tamron lens checked all my boxes -- superwide, OIS 'VC', generally well-reviewed, and not extravagantly expensive. If I set the lens to 15mm f/5.6 and composed in higher-contrast settings -- images were marginally acceptable. But most of the time, the lens produced lifeless, dull, and painfully unsharp results. I may have bought a lemon, and I finally sold it at a steep discount 'as is' using an unvarnished description that included my negative opinion (way too late to return to the store). I'm guessing the buyer wanted the product box as much as the lens!

Does anyone have any input in terms of weight? The plastic build is scoring points with me and the ultra wide angle is also pretty appealing in terms of vlogging; but say you were to mount it on a 600/700D with a gorillapod - how light is it? Canon glass is better quality but generally heavier, so given the overall positive review it would be a nice change to have a light, ultra wide lens instead of having to consider investing in a G7x or M range.
