The reason the Font Manger button was disabled was because your OSD chip was not detected. Some flight controllers only power the OSD chip (MAX7456) when the battery is connected and not when only on USB. In these cases be sure to connect the battery first then USB.

Also, if the font upload is inconsistent, just plug in for that power cycle that comes. When I'm doing batch work, I just plug in to do the VTX Table test, motor direction test, and OSD Font Upload (even without changing locations for things)

I see you suggest doing a (diff all) to save settings when upgrading. How do we load it back into the CLI? I'm assuming we copy and paste but what command in the CLI will write it. Assuming we just hit save and enter after the copy and paste? I tend to build two quads the same and all my racers are so similar I can move all my settings into them all. After updating them all it will surely save me set up time. Thanks for all your wisdom

Hmmm would there be anything in particular to watch out for in your PID Tuning Principles that might not jive well with BF 4.2? All else equal, when I updated my quads to 4.2, they just feel different almost too much Feed Forward.

Hi. I noticed and issue with bf 4.2 and gps return to home. I see that in the "report issue" there are a few with the same problem. Would I also report my issue with the FC and other information kinda like you have said to do in the past info not opinion or do I leave it because it's been reported. Thanks much

If it seems like the same issue already reported, put your information under the report that exists. Kind of like, "I'm having the same issue, see the DVR at xxx. Look like when i arm the retuen arrow is wrong, but the quad ??? (does Rescue mode still work right?) (Did you try to re-upload fonts?). Especially if it is something you think that it is unique or that could help pinpoint the problem.

The d term lpf are set to pt1 on default. Would it be better to switch to biquad? Is disabling gyro lpf 1 & 2 still relevant? since doing so removes the slider which makes me feel as if its not recommended

I need to test the difference between the two approaches to see if there is evidence of one being better than the other. There are two ways to reduce filter delay. Turn off filters that are not that effective. Or raise those filters cutoff to reduce the delay. In what I have seen, turning filters off seems to be a more effective way to cut out filter delay, but another influential person thinks the best general advice is to move them up and I have tried to play along since 4.0 release. That said, I'm not positive it is the best advice to just move up when you look at the numbers. This said, i have not vetted thoroughly yet to conclusively say which is the best approach. Sliders we developed are definitely simpler. I wanted them to turn off filters, but that is not how it ended up.

Thanks Mark, great summary! I fly three quads on BF 4.2.0 #2180 (dev.) at the moment, do you think I can upgrade to this release candidate 1 just by pasting a "difff all"? As I use a slider based tuning, will all sliders show up at the right position (wich maybe is inverse at the PD balance now)? The sag compensation is a big improvement to the VBAT compensation before, but I noticed that you have to set it individual for each PID profile. Would be nice to have it as a configurator switch.

Yeah, if on a nightly, i assume you are experienced. I do bring DIFF ALLs forward. But i look to see wsup and can handle a left turn if they come up.

I've got some older quads I haven't worked on for awhile with 3.5 on them, and I have the more recent configurators, do I need to download the old configs to Change pids on those or can I do that with the new ones?

If you've got custom tunes on them the sliders will be disabled unless you reset to the new default pids. But yes shouldn't be a problem.

I'm confused about dynamic idle. I'm understanding it as being an option to be used if one wanted to run a low idle without Dsync? Is that about it or does it add stability no matter what idle we run at. I always leave it at the stock 5.5

Right now, when you motors applies breaking that is only down to 5.5% (assuming you have default set); not down to 0%. With enabling Dynamic Idle that changes and when the breaks are hit on the motor, the stop force is from 0%. However, at 0 stick, you motors will only go down to 5.5% idle like normal. So with Dynamic Idle enabled, if you move up the D-shot idle to say 6.5%, breaking force is still at 0%. Secondarily, when you are at 0% throttle with a 5.5% Dshot Idle, and assuming your Dynamic Idle is set per the wiki (20% lower than Dshot Idle), when you do a roll or flip while at 0% throttle, it will let the motors on one side slow down by 20%. Without dynamic idle, in a flip or roll at 0% throttle, it only speeds up the motors on one side as the other are already at the lowest value. Those are the primary two benefits of Dynamic Idle. Is it a MASSIVE thing? Probably not, but mileage will vary and it is one little step further that a contributor to BF felt was worth while with a solid foundation of concept, it was vetted, and shown to provide some improvement.

I actually have few I like to fly and to tinker with, especially in these days of confinement boredom that run older versions of BF. Just wanted to be sure I could drop the older configurators, I even have version 3.1.3 on my pc...lol.

Thanks very instructive as usual. I have a question regarding those PID sliders. They are just great but in 4.1 it seems that we're unable to access them in the OSD. Will this be a future feature ? I'd love being able to tweak them without having to carry my antique laptop on the field.

Galileo is the European version of the GPS, long delayed but it now has enough satellites to start working. It will provide benefits anywhere in the world. The system is fully compatible with GPS, in practice it will be like having more GPS satellites to get signal from. Moreover, the position should be more precise when using Galileo, specially in high latitudes.

I now have BF 4.2 with RPM filter JazzMaverick 16.79 at 48 kHz on my Tinyhawk 2 (1S battery) and it flies really well, but I don't get along with the filters. Can you give me tips? -> PID's set p_pitch = 118 set i_pitch = 144 set d_pitch = 115 set f_pitch = 152 set p_roll = 107 set i_roll = 136 set d_roll = 107 set f_roll = 144 set p_yaw = 115 set i_yaw = 144 set d_yaw = 0 set f_yaw = 144

Lower PIDs so D-term is in the 60 to 90 range. Put sliders at 1.0. Defaults for RPM Min. = 100 Set Dyn Notch width =0 Q = 200 Min. = 100 Max. = 300

Betaflight is the most optional as far changes, switches, adjustments & setups correct?? More than kiss, Flight1 & I nav!! Do you see a fork in BF that will ever be its own config but all the options & setups simplified?? I don't mind & I have had kiss & flgith1 so those do seem more one size fits all!! I however do see alot of pilots complain & struggle and ultimately switch to kiss or flight1 just for ease of use. Do you see BF droping a slimmed down config ever??

No. It is pretty simple already IMO. Look at iNAV or Emu. BF is way simpler.

You mentioned is already, Fl1ght 1 FalcoX might be what you seek. But is it beta? or stable ,robust yet? If someone forks BF and do its own thing for first full stable 5th version you are 2 to 5 years further to do what Fl1ght 1 did or is doing now.

There are more switches overall, that lets it be super flexible. Yes, there are more options to get something wrong if you're pulling levers to see what they do, but 4.2 with the Presets on the GitHub, plus Tuning Guide WIKI will get you there for sure. To get any quad in the 2.5-7" range flying good, you're a flash and a CLI snipped away.

The European Galileo GPS system seems to work great with BF 4.2. You can see in my last video I have up to 26 sats and a HDOP of 0.8 Awesome!

Hi sir i flashed my bumble bee to 4.2. Actually 4.1 with ur pid tune was flying better. 4.2 is worse oscilation like sudden accelaration on low throttle and losing controll. Any clue?

Set the 4.2 setting the same as 4.1 and you will get the same results.

There should be a dump diff command that only dumps config that can be safely used on any version of BF. Like motor mapping, modes, rates etc

I'm still on 4.1 and I'm having a really weird issue on my 6 inch, where it spins out on the yaw axis if the throttle is too high. Does anybody have any idea what could cause this? Is it in the software (ie I need to tune) or is it a flight controller error? (if you want to see the issue, I do have a video of it if you click on my profile)

I still use version 4.0. It works. I get a chuckle how many upgrade even when the benefits are minimal. I wait for others who think they need to upgrade every version to find the always present issues. If you wait a couple of generations, most bugs have been fixed.

For many, part of the hobby enjoyment is trying new things, pushing the envelope, learning new things, etc. To each their own. It is not for everything and nothing wrong with 4.0. Anything prior to 4.0 though has as a subpar Dyn Notch filter (amazing at the time, but way better in 4.x releases). But there is definitely betterment in 4.2 that is not there in 4.0. Most notably, FF improvements.

I hear ya there. I use Autodesk software. Full of bug on fist release! We always wait for a Service Pack or two before upgrading there. With BF, there are always things (like ALL software), but anything major is capture in the RC phase from what I have seen. The main devs (gate keepers) are pretty thorough in their QA reviews from what I have seen. So to their credit, honestly, even nightly builds are generally good, but of course the point to flying those is to be a beta tester and find thing even before the RC releases (through logging, etc.). So by the time it gets to RC, plenty of packs by a lot of guys have been through the Candidate.

Does anyone has an issue with low battery level in the OSD even when it is fully charged? My Lipo is fully charged but the OSD reports it is almost depleated. This is happening in my two quads since I updated to 4.2. :(

the back-up and restore doesn't carry all the setting. It carries very few actually and also you can't edit or see what it is doing easily in Notepad. Whereas as DIFF ALL and Save is simple. You can also do a restore by selecting the saved DIFF ALL in the CLI tab. Honestly, they should just remove backup and restore.

Yes, the configurator will show 3.2kHz for the BMI160 Bosch gyro used on the Radix boards (when they eventually get a 4.2 target).

can there please be a new osd option to show battery cell count? so people that only use single cell voltage still have a way to show which battery they have, without having to have another giant element on the screen single cell voltage also seems to be a more precise measurement

PD Balance should have been left the way you wanted like in 4.1. Otherwise, the way it is in 4.2, it should be called DP Balance (since "high"/"low" raises/lowers the D Max/Min, respectively, while P stays the same). Confusing.

the pre-weapon doesn't work and this is a can because I'm used to a pre-assembled, oily channel for the right yaw to put together for more safety. and arming a channel I don't see security.

I really need to try this windup on my 10inch.... it still isnt flying right and I still fight with the filtering 🙈... but it also has some I term accumulation on the end of flips and rolls. Reducing the I term relax to 10 helped a good bit. Maybe it improves things even more.

I always had it enabled in the CLI and I can see absolutely no situation where "set homepoint once" would have any benefit when off for miniquads. I could imagine running around a giant film set or something with a huge quadcopter that lasts for half an hour and you wouldn't want to power cycle because it takes a long time... and this is already pretty far-fetched.

Whelp folk freestyle, hit shit, disarm and rearm and keep flying. If they have a FS or get stoped on, they want it to come back to them, not some random rearm location. So there ya go. One easy scenario. Someone had a need and added. Look at the PR. It was probably the guy who submitted the PR.
