There's a flaw in this scene. Charles De Mar has been going to this high school for 7 and 1/2. There's no way he would be so excited to get picked by the teacher to solve the problem.

This movie was good, but it sure seemed like an odd extension of Fast Times at Ridgemont high, to an extent. There were literally THOUSANDS of teen movies from the late 70s-about 1990. There had to be similarities, sooner or later.
