On that notch in lantern handle, it seems the purpose is for your hand to get a better grip when doing various signaling functions that required swinging motions, especially when wearing gloves in cold weather. Holding the handle above the notch would also keep you from dumping the fuel out. As someone who worked in dark places, I also suspect it would give you a quick reference as to which side the wick control was on without fumbling in the dark.

I don't know about the indentation. I like the real life sounds you get Ken. Yay, you had just enough track to finish the third track! Wow, all three of the running! Excellent video Ken!! The bend in the handle was an intentional bend by Dietz. The bend in the handle(bail) was put there so when it was held to do signaling, your thumb was put into that bend to give you better control of the lantern when swinging it. It’s basically a thumb bend to comfort your grip.
