I think one of the reasons this series is getting popular is that most people's earliest nostalgia regarding this game is just looking at the land in wonder.

I agree! A lot of people enjoy that old world sense of wonder and exploration :)

When I first started playing this game, after finishing most of the things you can do in Duskwood and beginning to run out of quests, I figured I could just get new ones in the neighbouring zone, but instead of picking Stranglethorn Vale, where you're supposed to go after Duskwood, I picked Deadwind Pass because it was closer to town. After finding that zone mostly empty and finally running into some NPC's that oneshotted me, I ended up in the Swamp of Sorrows, thinking this was going to be the next place to go quest in. I must have wandered around this place for about an hour or so before I finally figured out that there was no Alliance flightpath here and there was little I could do there at level 28. Eventually stumbled my way into STV, but I had a hell of a good look around in wonder there first. I was pretty amazed that they would put a place this 'dangerous' this close to a low level town, but I'm probably one of very few people who was dumb enough to stumble their way in there long before you're supposed to.

The Last Guardian mentioned there were at least some human settlements in these areas. I wonder what they were like? The Lousiana of Stormwind Kingdom? (Could be one of the spurces for darker skinned humans, I feel like it fits better than Stranglethorn which is where Weismann's kid book said most of them were from. There's just too many trolls in there, Swamp and Morass they were only really around the Temple.

My theory on the famous bridge in that zone is, that the residents of Karazhan build the bridge, probably when they were working on the dark portal. It's the only bridge of its kind surviving the harsh swampy environment.

The blasted lands is mesmerizing. It reminds me of the Aiel Wastes from The Wheel of Time after they had repelled a demonic incursion. Invasion implies theyd make it past the united clans, and if theyre good enough dancers to out do those vicious people. Can not recommend enough to read the WoT series, best American high fantasy series in my opinion.

If either the tides or the groundwater reach up as far as the Pool of Tears, that could be a reason for the name. It would be like a pool of tears both literally because it's a brine pool, and figuratively because you can't drink it.
