New additions are eucalyptus tree, 4ft tree fern, looking to find Gunnera and Paulownia to add this year. Creating a hidden patio area at the back of the garden with winding pathways to the area. Will have loads of space to plant up to hide the patio area we are going to create, so looking at cheap and effective ways to achieve this. Looking for a couple of impact plants for a bit of an immediate ‘wow’ factor. Researching ‘clumping’ bamboo to use in the space. Researching that too. The Ensete survived dry storage in the home and the musa basjoo survived outside over the winter too…hurrah! Canna rhyzomes are waking up! Dry scored in the home over winter. Ricinus growing indoors, seeds from last year. All good! Exotic/ tropical themed gardening is an absolute joy! ❤ Thanks for your update George.

Hi Melanie, I like the sound of your hidden patio plans and those a some great plant choices I obviously approve of! I guess when it comes to the plants to hide the patio, the main question is whether you need them to be evergreen or not? Clumping bamboo are great and Scottish Bamboo have a wide range of Fargesia in. Kimmei bamboo is great for inspirational photos too. As for instant impact, the choices are endless but I'd just make sure whatever you get is going to be hardy enough for your garden. Thanks for letting me know about your successes and I'm pleased to know you're looking forward to and getting ready for this years' display! Hopefully we both have some lovely spring weather very soon!

Spot on, George. I feel for anyone who started their exotic garden last year, with the winter we've had. But I've just returned from Cambridge Uni Botanic Gardens and they too have had losses - echiums wiped out, mature agaves under covered succumbed, tetrapanax looking worse for wear etc. Onwards and upwards in to spring! 😄🌸
@GeorgesJungleGarden
Жыл бұрын
Definitely, it's been a rough one across most of the country and once again reminded us of the difference between 'hardy' and 'should be hardy'. It's a shame the Echiums have been wiped out, there was a whole bank of them in a village near me and they would have been incredible this spring but it was not to be. Yes, some spring weather would certainly help with the plants' recoveries and general optimism too!

@@OssyDL Yep, great to hear things are starting to move for you. I wouldn't say worrying for nothing but most of the damage I've experienced here for example is either young plants or plants which realistically were never tough enough for a cold winter up here. I had some shocking expensive losses this winter, and it was [mostly] my own fault because they were all in pots, I failed to move them to their winter spots and then went away for three weeks. Butia Capitata, two Cordylines, Phoenix Canariensis, [which was in the flipping greenhouse so I don't blame myself for that one!], and two Fatsia Japonica's . All except the Fatsias were good mature big plants that I had looked after perfectly well for 5 years in this garden. Luckily, my still quite young Tetrapanax survived and is thriving. It's my favourite and if it had died too, it might have finished me off!

It was a brutal winter for a lot of exotics, I lost a lot here too unfortunately. It's definitely been a harsh one and there definitely seems to be a bit of variability across different plants in different gardens.
