Donald, I have used reinforcement wire for years but self standing with wooden 1”x1” supports and also had to reach in and weed by hand within the cage. After watching a number of your videos and taking up your philosophy of “If one is good two has got to be better”. I started using 2 T-post on each side of the cage and elevating cage 10 to 12 inches above the ground to allow me to hoe and side dress around the plant. Keep up the good work. As a fellow Louisiana boy “Hang in there” Carey

We have been useing concrete tomato wire cages for years. We cut off the bottom ring so that we have prongs that we poke into the ground. This saves us alot of T post. We do put a t post at each end of the row and run a wire down the middle of the row to secure all the tomato cages.

Yet again, another great video Don. You know our tomatos Plants have grown higher this year then any other year.! And the seedlings that we planted back in the beginning of April are the tallest ones. We have been using the standard cages you buy at the store and all our plants are tipping over this year. So next year we'll be making some of these cages. This year has been our best year for a garden.. And you deserve some of the credit.. Thanks again for your videos. I just love them!

I made your pickled beets last year , they were great. It was a sad day when we ran out last winter...haha, this year i will make more. Its great to see your grand daughter helping you out. If we continue planting large varieties those big cages will work so much better. I've even thinking of stacking one on top of the other and seeing if I can get a 10 ft. tall tomato plant. LOL Glad you had a good year... next year will be even better. I know I learn more with each passing season. Keeping things simple is the key IMHO ........ Donald

Donald, I am glad that you talked about tension that would be on the roll. I bought some and when I cut those pieces holding it together, that coil went crazy... If I hadn't seen your video, then I am sure that I would have had to go to the doctor and get a Tetanus shot cause I am sure that I would have gotten scraped or cut from that rusty wire. Thanks for the video! Brad

I've been using concrete reinforcing wire for years for my tomato's and I'm going to share,in my opinion, the best way to grow tomatoes. Cut the horizontal wires right next to a vertical wire. Cut to the desired length, approx. 2 feet in diameter. Cut the bottom horizontal wire off, this will leave spikes you can jab in the ground. Take your 9 inch pliers and bend a hook on the horizontal ends. Once you have made your hooks, roll your cage and hook and bend them to the vertical wires . Now you have your cages made. Once your plants get to the point where you have put your cages up for support, put a soaker hose next to the plants, get some wheat straw and put around the plants and make sure not to puncture the hose with the spikes. The wheat straw will keep the moisture constant. Wheat straw is the key to good tomatoes. In the early stages of your tomato growth, you don't have to worry about your cages being blown over, but when they start growing out the top of the cage, they act as sail and will blow over. I usually have around twenty plants. I drive a t post at each end and one in the middle and use a strand of electric fence wire ran through cages. This will prevent cage blow down. Hope this will help.

UraniumMan I have used field fencing for years for tomato plants, just drive 2 metal fence post into ground next to the cages and a couple wire wraps around the cage and fence post and they hold up fine. I have 6 ft tomato plants right now growing in mine loaded with tomatoes and they stand up fine. I too used surplus fence material I had laying around. GO FOR IT

@webcajun Thank You for getting back to me, my tiny house has no room for a green house (someday I hope for a dream house),and I don't grow enough yet to can, only enough to go out and pick while they are growing.. But, I bet your info will help other people that can do it. On the other hand, I think I will at least try to cover them with thick clear plastic bags outside, and come up with some sort of a way to heat them a little, maybe it will work,IDK yet.

Everything is set, ready to plant tomatoes when the time comes. I think this system is going to work really well for me this year. The hard part is going to be making the cages. Also I wondered about putting the worms in the dug out holes to over winter so that the ground will be sweet with their castings?

Yup,that kind of wire has hit me in the face, side, and lags more than once until I started laying it flat on the ground springy side down then standing on it. But that was in the good old days before I got rear ended, its has taking me 10 years to be able now to grow some tomatoes in 5 Gal. buckets, only 4 this year but its a start and it makes me feel better and its fun to do. I don't know what it is, but even as a S.Calif Valley kid, there is something magical growing things like tomatoes.

I,ve found that its cheaper to use grey conduit for a watering system in the garden then P.V.C. on a Timer here in the desert.,with a hole 3/16 @ every plant laid out.,Its all depends on lin. ft. and measurement.BIG water savings and alot less weeds.
