My boyfriend's favorite food in the world is custard. I was trying to make meringues, which uses very similar ingredients. When the meringue wasn't coming together I was heartbroken, and tried to save it last minute by trying to change it to something else. I vaguely recalled that custard is made with eggs too, so I poured my mixture into some ramekins and put those in a tray with water. Didn't know how long to bake it, just did so by vibes alone. When it was done, it was the CREAMIEST, lightest, most delicate tasting custard. My boyfriend went absolutely crazy for it. Asked me how I did it, begged for my recipe, and I confessed that I had no idea what I did, I just panicked. I did eventually figure it out though, and I have looked up how to properly make custard, but it was an interesting experience to just bumblefuck my way into making my boyfriend's favorite treat. EDIT: My meriangue didnt work out bc I didn't have tartar, tartar is what makes the egg whites and sugar stiffen to hold air! Dont be like me, read a recipie lol

Sounds like one of four things. 1) You might've cooked it for the wrong amount of time. Whether too long or too short, I dunno, because I don't know your recipe. 2) It's possible liquid entered the equation when it shouldn't have, such as you missed a step and went back. Or maybe you dumped when you should've poured slowly, or even vice versa. 3) It could've been as simple as you trying to spread it evenly and that just wasn't your strong suit at that point. 4) Maybe too much sugar. This will act like a wet ingredient. It sounds like you enjoyed it, was it good? What was the consistency like, a little soft and runny like bean dip is? Could you cut it, or did you have to spoon or scoop it?
@happyhippoeaters4261
Ай бұрын
@@lilahofmann8239 I didn't think about spreading it out more, I will have to try that. As of consistency, it was like canned refried beans, adding to the illusion. It is also this odd consistency that is the part that eludes me, I have gotten too liguidy, and too firm, but not that perfect in-between. Maybe I am just going for something that has too many perfect conditions to meet, and will be impossible unless I know all of what I did originally exactly.

It reminds me of how I once made perfect banana muffins as an accident :-D I was in a friend's house with his kids and they wanted to bake with me. They had some overripe bananas there and I figured out, the best way to do it "together" was to give both the kids sliced bananas and ask them to mash it :-D they both were really young so I did not want anything dangerous in their hands. The older (5yo) helped me mix it all together and both helped me put it in cups to bake. We baked a similar recipe later, because they loved it so much. Almost every visit we made something. I am usually a bit scared to experiment, but I did not want to disappoint them. You got banana? Great! Hmm... Do you want to put chocolate in it? What? Smarties? Ok, why not. We changed it every time. Used whatever they asked and it felt ok for me. And they were so happy when they presented it to their parents later. It's funny. I am very anxious and probably won't ever have kids on my own (medical issues), but playing with kids makes me bold to try many crazy things with them.

Maybe because it wasn’t a RANDOM kid? It was the child of a family friend. So if they remained friends with the family for all those years, the kid wouldn’t have to go on a “Hallmark journey” to find the person. I did that with a steak. My friend was gifted a huge steak (big enough for the grown men who he invited to enjoy eating it with. Told them I was able to get rid of the gamey smell/taste that all wild meat had. I marinated that steak overnight in an orange marinade(navel orange, olive oil and secret spice blend - so secret i forgot what spices i used(1 spice you never use with meat)). Got my roomate to cut the vegetables properly(shape and size have a huge effect on taste) - he used to work in a 4 star swiss hotel. Placed that monstrous steak into the biggest cast iron skillet with the marinade, vegetables, handmade tomato sauce and a dairy product(yogurt? Or cream?). Then the other friend with the most cooking with wine experience added just the right amount of white wine. We then placed it into the oven to broil. Then proceeded to debate the wine expert on when the steak was done. I won due to it being moosemeat. All of a sudden I head a ding in my head(like a kitchen timer) and pulled it out of the oven. Way too early according to wine expert and about 2 minutes my planned removal. Best dang steak EVER(sorry Texans but whats true is true) 5 very happy men leaned back and enjoyed the bliss for a good while.
