See, some people just like post time codes in the comments to where the “actual topic” starts cause they don’t want to hear you talk about your sponsors again. Personally I don’t mind, and this episode more than anything reinforces that. If you didn’t have all these sponsors you would never have been able to do all of this for Evan. I’m really glad everything worked out and I know none of it would be possible without amazing sponsors like these. That’s why I can listen to shoutouts to cardkingdom and ultrapro every episode and not feel tempted to look for a timecode in the comments.

I had a really nice double-benefit political move the other day. This was early game and I kept a shady hand, two lands and a 3-drop mana rock. So I had 3 turns to draw a land and I'm good, but I didn't. I did have a Karametra's Favor though, and my opponent had a Fertilid. I proposed, I'll ramp you by enchanting your Fertilid if you give me a land. He took it, he was able to do a better play with the extra mana, and I was able to get back on track. Politics are awesome!

As a new player to both Magic in general and also to commander as a format, I can say that Command Zone and Game Knights have played a HUGE role in getting me more and more interested in the format. The way that you guys present information appeals to a wide variety of people with a wide range of skill levels, probably even more than you guys realize. I spent all winter and most of the spring watching and re-watching every episode of Game Knights and Extra Turns so hopefully when I am able to get back to my LGS to play, I can feel more like I "belong" at the table with the more experienced players.

I'm not gonna lie, when I saw Evan and heard his story, I thought the sentiment was beautiful and the idea was awesome. That said, I was nervous to continue on, because he's not an established personality, and if I was in his position I would likely choke up/not contribute very much. I'm very pleased to admit that I was 100% incorrect. Not only did he bring up some great points, he brought a good amount of "insider info" to the discussion, and was a joy to listen to. It's all well and good to claim he's a strong individual given his disease, but that's unfair to him. He's a strong, intelligent kid regardless of his condition, I hope he and his friends continue to kick some ass in commander, and that he eventually is able to do something with the passion and talent he has for the game. A+ episode guys, thanks for the discussion.

20:20 Another example would be Rashmi with elf tribal. Seems fine on paper: Elves make mana for counterspells, counterspells protect elves. But it falls apart as soon as you add non-mana tribal payoffs or go-wide finishers, because the counterspells prevent you from reaching critical creature mass and the go-wide cards take away space that you'd need for card draw to maintain the control strategy.

Diplomacy is by FAR the most powerful and useful resource in a commander game. All my games inevitably devolve in some political drama, in the most game of thrones-ish fashion possible, and that is my favourite thing about this format. Actually I am the one who tries to extort and manipulate other players, even when that backfires I have a ton of fun.
@ACertainGuy0
5 жыл бұрын
Something I do when I play against newer players: Play Group Hug. Seriously, play group hug with them, let them see how their deck interacts in an accelerated state. For some people results are how they get enjoyment and my group hug deck is a Kruphix deck with nothing but Group draw and Group Ramp spells. Get everyone's mana out fast, give them 20 cards and see who explodes. If your friend explodes first they get to do what their deck was planning to do and hopefully win! If they get to do what their deck intended and they win quickly, that most of the time equates to a fun experience which effectively gets their foot in the door. Once that is done you help them tune and improve their decks and make them do that same thing without the need for your group hug deck helping them. Also a big fat No-No that I swear to god I have seen people do and that is play any of the following against new players: Infinite Loops (yes this includes infinite mana even if you cant do anything with it), Stax, Chaos and the worst offender, a CEDH deck. Someone actually thought if he made his friend watch him circlejerk his CEDH deck by turn 3-4 it would be fun for him. Its not fun for new magic players OR new EDH players to watch someone else have fun when they are barely learning. Avoid those deck styles with new players if you want them to have fun and actually enjoy the game with you.

Honestly the thing I always tell people is to watch every single game knights video, and start them on the Commander 2018 one. The videos are very well edited and although fast paced, give a good idea of how the game is played when you know what you're doing. And by watching those videos, if you pause on every card you don't know, you will learn a TON. Admittedly I picked this game up incredibly quickly compared to most people, but after about 4 days of watching just the commander gameplays, not even any podcasts, I pretty much had a full handle on the game besides the nitty gritty of the stack, priority, and such.

evan was articulate and concise in his analysis of new to the format topic. this episode was so good and hit home with me. I too started magic with paper during the origins block and made elfs as my first deck. I also liked his take on introducing people to magic. I used to use my elfs for new player teaching. what I like to do now is play a muli-player 60 card game and let them use my naya dinosaur deck as it is powerful and simple. since it almost always wins it also make their first game "fun" as they smash everyones deck with it. this gives the added benefit of introducing them to muli-player their very first time, since my ultimate goal is to get more players in our meta for commander (sneaky).

I love bringing new people into commander! I used to bring a Marwyn deck with me to my LGS on commander nights as something easy for people to learn on while I would play a more difficult to pilot deck. Most of the time, my Marwyn deck would win because it's just a good deck, but there's always a point about halfway through where the person gets this look in their eye like they've just realized some card interaction and the sheer joy of realizing that they figured out a combo is just priceless. The other people I play with generally feel the same way and even when I have to leave, they'll pull out similar decks so that the new person can keep playing.

I think the point about people playing magic for various reasons is a really good one cus I quite like it for a few reasons, partly for making the actual deck. Like, it's fun to find a card that you really like and then make a deck with that theme in mind, to find what you need to cover potential downsides/weaknesses, etc but to also see what works well with it. But I also play magic mainly as a social thing. I have a group of friends who've I've gotten to know from playing magic and it's a lot of what we do together. And I like the artwork as well. I'm known in my play group for taking people's cards after they've been played (partly to see what they do) but also just to look at the artwork for a sec. It doesn't matter if it's some card I've never seen before or just a Forest with some new artwork, there's a chance I might take a quick peak once the play is made XD I feel like the artwork is under appreciated sometimes cus a lot of it's really good =)

I have found that after letting new players play commander for the first time , I think giving the new player their first commander from your trade binder is a great way to get the player extra excited. Also one deck building tip to help new players is that it is a fluid and no perfect science. it's trial and error and have fun :)

One of my favorite things of teaching others on magic is when they ask me "i want to build a deck but i dont have cards/money/ect." I literly give them my binder and say "here you go i havnt found a use for these yet, keep what you make" thats becuse of how big my collection has gotten where i activly look for new players. which drives other players that have a bigger collection then me nuts. "oh you should orgnize your binder for XYZ" me: "no because, new players"

I had 42 casual Kitchen table type decks when I taught my now wife to play the game. The first deck I had for new people was a mono green deck with some Mana dorks into Craw wurms and I just played her with those and then when I decided to play commander I decided to have her look and see what sort of commander she would like to play. Now we have all 16 0-2 Colour combinations built.
