Cam that has to be the smoothest pickup I've ever seen you have, each stroke even into the sprint was incredibly smooth with a lot less bicep pop at the catch when you're trying to get those watts down, I don't know if that is a product of the newly cleaned chain or a conscious decision but that was beautiful to watch. Right at 4:40 is a great example, your drive is so even through the drive and not front end heavy that it actually looks in the camera like your slowing your drive into the release when you in reality are dropping split, looks like the handle is light as a feather, absolutely beautiful job, I've watched hundreds of hours of you're rowing and that has to be some of the most impressive erging I've seen, I'd compare it to the comparison video between you and Adam neill doing sprints, although you've made the style your own now, great job

Hi Cam, what I did see today in general, was an top athlet, who improved over the last years a lot and still considering the right choices. Very good idea, dealing with heart rate (endurance) in the 1st k vs strength in the 2nd k. That 5k time is still a beast! No need to question it too much.

I don’t know which was more exciting...the part where the masked man waited until you began rowing to try and steal your cell phone but thankfully changed his mind, or the part where your HR was 99% and had it gone up one more % it would have sputtered and stopped like an overworked lawn mower. 💔 😆 Thanks, Cam.

Congrats on beating the cut so comprehensively. Really pleased for you. Watching your videos over the past couple of weeks has inspired me to bring my C2 into the house (previously in the chilly garage), service it and get back on the horse, so to speak. Did my last sessions 8 years ago. My 8yr old son (a connection there maybe?) has also taken up the erg and is enjoying it. I must say I enjoy the endorphins post-exercise, but still adjusting to working out on the erg again. So, thank you Cameron. #yamsquad #motivation

Cam, great job! As far as your analysis goes about what type of performance/training your coaches want for you is concerned, I would ask this... what do you ultimately want to achieve? What is your goal? Make the team? Or, be an indoor world record holder, or Olympic Gold Medalist in Men's Singles 2000 meter, or just the greatest overall athlete you can be? Yes, we must train our weaknesses and maintain our strengths, as one builds upon the other, but specificity is probably the most determining factor. If I have missed your plans for the track you are on, then, I am sure you are on the right track! All that being said, you have grown into a force to be reckoned! Keep up the good work!

I feel like you almost always end on a faster pace than the average pace of the piece. You talked about the mental aspect, that it is mentally easy to push it for 8 to 10 strokes at the very end. Do you think (if it was mentally easier) pushing yourself harder earlier on and ending on a pace (slightly) above the average pace is a better tactic?
@CameronBuchan
3 жыл бұрын
Everyone works in different ways like I said I'm very anaerobic so a negative split plays into my favour. Flat or positive splitting isn't a better tactic for me currently but can be for other people
@corrie127
3 жыл бұрын
@@CameronBuchan the reason I've written the first comment was because for me my best 2k, I was not able to get lower splits anymore the last 100m because my legs were full of lactate acid. The split was slowly creeping up and 50m before the finish it was just above the average of the piece. The really high stroke rate kept the splits rather good even though my legs were full of lactate acid. So I was wondering if you use the same tactic as you were using video, except for starting your end sprint 100m (or a bit more than 100, but that requires trial and error to reach the sweetspot) earlier, then slowly the splits increase towards just beneat the average time of the piece. I think if you could mentally push yourself it would benefit your time. Sorry for the long text
@CameronBuchan
3 жыл бұрын
@@corrie127 like I said in the video, there is always room for a large last few strokes. Regardless of strategy you use. I did not start my sprint at 100m to go in the 5k, as you can see I was up at 140s in the 1st half and then before the last push down low 30s so I was in fact doing like you said and pushing down earlier already. Then last few, like I said, you can always find more for a few strokes, so I did. 👍
@corrie127
3 жыл бұрын
I see. One last comment, then I will not bother you any more I promise. When your last stroke is below the average split of the piece (and the stroke after the last stroke would also have been below the average split of the piece), then per definition you could have gone faster using a different strategy. (This rule of thumb does not apply to really short distances like 100 meters or below).

How much time do you spend on trying to improve your technique in particular for the erg? Obviously, you can improve your numbers that way in conjunction with your training load, but becoming an expert ‘erger’ wouldn’t necessarily translate to the water exactly. What are your thoughts on that?
@CameronBuchan
3 жыл бұрын
You're right, the erg rewards technique that sometimes isn't beneficial on the water. I think it's important to know what works and what doesn't for both so that you can do both. You can work on technique that is good for the water on the erg aswell as technique that is good for the erg and not necessarily for the water.
