This is a really informative video. I’ve played a lot of Gretsches and Les Pauls. I always prefer the feel of the B3/B6 to the tension bar B7. I have just bought an R4 Goldtop with the stop tail wraparound bridge. I was going to try fit a B6 on there with the stock wraparound bridge. I’m anticipating obstacles with break angle and string movement over the smooth wraparound bridge, but want to try it out. What do you think?

I've had a GFS "Fakesby" on my LP-style guitar for 10+ years and it works great. It looks identical to the B700, just without the Bigsby logo. I really think the issues you describe have to do with the individual piece, not the model. Perhaps how the spring fits in there, maybe something is sticking or grabbing where the spring sits. The unit itself works great. Personally I added a roller bridge. On archtops with a floating bridge you can use a bar bridge. Nice overview and cool guitars :)

Hi Bernardo! For the Sheraton I'd personally get a B3 with a Towner Down Tension Bar and Hinge Plate Adapter. That was you can go back to original if you prefer later. Plus I like the feel of that setup. For the Gibson SG Standard, I'd personally do a B5 and a Vibramate. Once gain no screw holes to contend with. I have an SG with a B3 on it but it's not the best setup.

Thanks for the great information on bigsbys. I'm thinking of installing a bigsby on my les paul less plus 2015 myself. I've heard different people saying that, on a les paul, there are tuning issues because the B7 sits close to the tune-o-matic bridge and causes the bridge to move and wiggle when the bigsby is used. Whats your experience?
@NickintheStates
8 жыл бұрын
I still prefer a B7 on a Les Paul There is less strain and issues if you use a Vibramate with it as it will raise up the Bigsby a bit. This will put less tension over the bridge and makes it more stable. Another key thing is to make sure you have a well lubricated nut. This will keep the strings from unnecessarily stretching.

Hey Nick, first of all, I just want to say your channel is awesome. I found your channel today when I was researching Bigsbys and this was really informative. But I had a question... I just ordered the Gibson Midtown Custom in Ebony and I really, really want to put a Bigsby on there. I'm looking to get an all gold Bigsby on there to really capture the look of a classic Gibson 355. But the Midtown Custom isn't an archtop so I'm a little worried... would this fit it? reverb.com/item/120546-aged-relic-bigsby-b7-gold-vibramate-v7-kit-b7g-gibson-les-paul-free-shipping

Edward Kim Hey Edward. Thanks for the kind words! It SHOULD fit. The Vibramate will help as it will lift the Bisgby up a little bit relative to the bridge. If it was too low the strings could hit the edge of the bridge on their way to the Bigsby. That is going to look great! Another option might be a Towner DTB and hing plate adapter. I use it on my SG with a Bigsby B3. That's a flat top using an archtop Bigsby as well. I have a video putting one on a 335 style guitar (Harley Benton E35). Check it out! It may work better...

Hey guy. Do you have a B5 or B50 on any flat top guitars WITHOUT a vibramate ?. I am going to fit a Bigsby on my SG tribute, but want to know if it will cover the post holes without the vibramate ... I'm not worried about drilling holes.
@NickintheStates
9 жыл бұрын
TelepathicTraffic Not retrofitted... but when I get home tonight I'll take a look and see. I think it would be just like a Les Paul where it is mostly covered with just a sliver of one showing. A lot of people mount them farther down the body so the screw holes are after the post holes but I personally think the look a little off. If it were me I'd measure the post holes and sink a couple dowels into where they were. Then just mount the Bigsby where god intended it.
@TelepathicTraffic
9 жыл бұрын
Nick in the States I guess my question is do I NEED a vibramate ... most people seem to purchase one, but I don't know if it's just easier or they want to avoid drilling holes. It's my understanding that if I purchase a vibramate then I need the B5 and the B50 won't fit. Anyway, I think I'm just going to go ahead with the B50 and see how it looks ... it's cheaper as well. From what I can tell there is no set place for a Bigsby, mostly up to preference, however the instructions advise to mount the bar over where the original tailpiece would be. Thanks.
@NickintheStates
9 жыл бұрын
TelepathicTraffic Ahh gotcha. No, you don't need one. Most people just follow the herd and get one. Gibson has mounted them all over the place over the years on SG's. I'd prefer to mount it as close to the bridge as possible that still allows the strings not to rub the bridge edge on its path to the Bigsby. If you're willing to have holes then no need at all on the Vibramate.
@TelepathicTraffic
9 жыл бұрын
Nick in the States I'm going to get a roller bridge with it as well. I was toying with it today. I'll mount it as per instruction and to hide the holes as best as possible. I'll fill the bridge holes if I must I suppose.

+Mike Boudreaux Hey Mike! If it's a stop tail I'd get a towner down tension bar which will replace the stop tail portion. Then get their hinge plate adapter and a Bigsby B3. The strap pin screws through the hingeplate adapter and holds the Bigsby to the guitar without any holes. It's really the perfect solution for a stop tail 335.

That is actually up to you. For a Casino, I'd do a B3 with a towner hinge plate adapter. No screw holes on the nice full hollow Casino. If you do a B7 it will screw to the top. ALSO.... 3 and 6 best for "taller" (often "floating") bridge = on a base, 3 on ES thinline HOLLOW body (125, 330 etc, or Casino), 6 best for larger hollow body (ES 175 etc, Gretsch 6120 etc). 7 was designed for "lower" usually "fixed" bridge... like T.O.M bridge on Les Paul, 335 etc = solid or semi hollow. B 5 for "flat top" (SG, Tele) solid body for the most part but will work on one that's arched a bit, will work on some smaller Gretsch, best with lower/fixed bridge but can function on a Jet (but 3 better due to taller bridge).

B-3 works great... but what some people do is get the B-6 but swap the hinge part to the one from the B-3. The B6 has a long piece to attach to the body for deep jazz guitars. Guitarpartsresource I believe sells the part to swap. Another cool thing is that you can get vintage B3s for basically same price as new.

Hi Belo! This is where I have a challenge too. A B7 looks right... but the break angle is really tight because it's so close to the bridge. A B3 with a towner down tension bar mounted in the stop tail holes works rather well too. Just make sure to get a V block with it so that it can mount to the body without any holes and be properly positioned. A B6 I think would need to swap the hinge with a B3/B6. Could work too, but I'd go the B3 route. TownerUSA.com has more info on their stuff. I've used them a bunch and great stuff.

They're also a great entry into the hollow/semi hollow realm of guitars. Not too much bigger than an LP but not huge like a ES335 or ES175. For me coming the other direction they're just a little too small because I'm used to the giants!

@Nickin the States I have a 1994 ES 135 and I am considering having a Bigsby installed . The one thing I am hesitant on is the drilling on the top of the guitar as it may lessen the value . However I don't ever intend to sell it and like yours it is a guitar that has great meaning for me for the same reasons . I'm pretty close to talking myself into it .Are you glad you did it and are you pleased with the performance of the guitar since then?

Thank you for this explanation Nick...extremely helpful for me, as I want to nail it for a new hollowbody DIY project (going for a B7, no Vibramate...)

Nick, thanks for putting this video together. I also have a 2014 Melody Maker. I am planning on adding a Bigsby. I see you have Les Pauls with both the B3 and the B7. If you had to put a Bigsby on your Melody Maker all over again, which one would you use, and why. Does the B3 have sufficient break angle to keep the strings located in the saddles when picking hard? Also for bonus points, could you replace the wrap around bridge on that guitar for a regular tune-o-matic or similar roller bridge now that the Bigsby is installed? Thanks so much for your time.

Thanks for showing us the various Bigsby vibrato arms. It's an aspect of guitars which isn't spoken of enough despite it's role in the guitar world. It actually has quite a lot of history, would be nice to see a documentary on this, thanks.

I didn't knew different bigsbies had different actions. I have a Gretsch Electromatic with a B7 and it's perfect. Some days ago I bought a Tagima Jet Blues with a tele-like Bigsby, and it's action is harder and smaller than that one of the Gretsch.

Thank you. I found this to be very informative as I want to get a guitar with a Bigsby and have read all negatives regarding them. I love the look of them and will pursue one. 😁

Thank you very much! I saw you put a Bigsby on a project guitar in minutes and that inspired me to install the vibrato or tremolo on my more boring guitars. I am at the point in my life that I really don't give a shit. I drilled and installed two Bigsbys. I forgot what the third boring guitar was so I put it on my happy red guitar. A 335 that I use for gigs. I play two nights and my work guitars are in need of string changes a lot. That was definitely stupid to put it on a very active guitar. They look great and when I was a little kid I wondered what the fuck is that. I have the same reaction now. They came on two guitars I really over paid for and almost gave away. I hate the memory of them, a shit Gretsch Corvette II and an ESP turd.

Are there any Bigsby options for a Firebird other than a Bigsby B5 w/Vibramate?

Good rundown of the many Bigsby models. I have a B5 with the Vibramate mount on my SG, and it works great and was easy to install. I added a roller bridge which probably helps. The only slight issues are with the Gibson tuners (typical). Thanks for sharing your collection.

I'm getting an Eastwood Classic 6. Later I'll add a bigsby. Should I install the Bigsby B6 or B7?

For an 'SG' or a Les Paul, the best Bigsby is the B3 and now you can get one with a COOL device called the 'TOWNER' Tension bar. It makes the best of the B3 and can be adjusted so as to not lose the legendary SUSTAIN of the two GIBSON's I just menitoned

YES! I have another video up where I put a B3 and a Towner DTB on it. Those guys are great... in fact I'm about to put one on my latest 335 style guitar and I'll probably do a video for that as well. Christian at Towner is also a really good, stand up guy.

I haven't... I've had one in my cart on eBay forever just to remind me to try them. Seems rather brilliant really. I may put one on my blue Bad Cat guitar as I've made a mess of the nut. Thanks for reminding me!

Hey Fernando, sorry for the delay in responding. For an AG75 I'd grab a B6. Only holes will be on the lower part of the guitar near the strap pin and likely will be covered by the original tailpiece if you ever put it back. Plus I really like the attack of a B6. It's very smooth and easy going.
