Ackman gets a bad rep from a certain section of the public due to his bold, border-line aggressive approach on his investments. Those people need to understand that despite he's a hedge fund manager, Ackman often acts as a private equity manager (easily seen by his invested companies' takeovers throughout time). Say what you want of him, but he isn't a billionaire for being a mediocre, dull manager/investor.

It sucks he had to give up on Herbalife. They are obviously a pyramid scheme but have found no shortage of fools to take advantage of. Herbalife will find its demise one day, but I can see not wanting to tie up all that capitol in that bet when there are better opportunities.

I suppose if you give hopes of having a successful life to people who can barely make their ends meet, you will find lots of people queuing to sign up! These people aren't necessarily fools, rather more desperate to get out their current life situation! But yeah, I have no idea how companies like Herbalife and Amway still manage to exist in this day and age!!
@TapalKuda

apparently bill ackman under estimated herbalife power that they have in those 3rd world countries, the high demand for stupid mlm products that they package as a business opportunity for the poors and low incomes!! dont know about u.s.a since i dont live there, but i just hate all of this multi level marketing companies like herbalife since most of those mlm companies are scammers that take away those poor family hard earned money!! You asked why amway and herbalife still exist.. becos they overpriced 10 x their mediocre products.. and stupid gullible people still buying those mlm craps!! so more power to ackman i am a big fan nevertheless!!

If I had to guess I would say he likes taking calculated risks just to add some action to his job which would otherwise be just a human adding machine. Also just because an organization has posed as legit for 30 odd years does not mean it is. There are people defrauding people for decades and when they are caught they are called career criminals not just considered innocent because they have gotten away with it so long.

Lose money? It's a short-term loss on paper. He hasn't sold anything yet. If you sell just because the market goes down, you're an idiot. Plus if you look over the long-term of his career as an investor, he has gotten some insanely high rates of return as an investor.

This is capitalism at its finest. Why do you think the Koch family never went public? If you go public, you are subject to the market. Ackman has made the majority of his investments to make companies better. Herbalife is a scam company, take a look at what they do!
