@nu385
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the crying on command was particularly impressive, especially for a guy. I can relate to this scene so much. There's just some people that don't seem to pick up on social cues at all. They just come with this crazy high energy and are completely oblivious to the fact that it's not being reciprocated. And when they're being so outwardly nice, it's hard to know what to do without seeming like a total dick. If you just keep saying nice, cordial responses back, they'll go on talking forever.

This is a speech any fan of a celebrity needs to hear. Just because you meet a celebrity or work with them on a small-time basis doesn't mean they need to be "cool" with you. Even if you're the biggest ever fan of their work, you might have just caught them at a time when they don't have the emotional bandwidth to listen to you gush about their work. Personally, it would be a nightmare for me if every time I went out in public there was a possibility someone might jump out like "OMG ITS YOU!!!!" even if they had perfectly good intentions. Everyone, famous or not, reserves the right to say, "Thanks for noticing, but I really just want to get home and not have a conversation right now." Really courageous of Louie to make himself look like the bad guy in this scene, but I hope it puts it in context for some fans that it doesn't make him a "good" or "bad" guy to have that reaction to this situation
@TheLANC95
4 жыл бұрын
This might be the best-written scene in Louie, because you can perfectly identify with both sides of the “meeting a celebrity/being a celebrity” situation. On one hand you get Louie’s feelings and understand not wanting to be a social dancing-monkey for every meet & greet Johnny Everyman from whereeverthefucksville, USA. On the other, you’re a fan. This is the only time in your life you’ll get to meet someone you hold so highly and know their work and have supported them. You want them to be “cool and nice.” There’s not much worse than meeting a celebrity who’s a bitter, rude, douchebag.

I think everyone has experienced being on both sides of this kind of interaction. When you just overtly crushed the spirit and enthusiasm out of another individual because you're in a bad mood, or had it done to you by someone else. And the way the scene just lets it stand, instead of Louie awkwardly apologizing afterwards or something makes it hit home even harder. There's really no easy way to reforge the connection between yourself and another individual after you torch the bridge between them and yourself beyond a certain point. It takes work and real focused intention to foster the bonds of trust and support between ourselves and others around us. There's a real nobility in being able to overcome the gravity of our own narcissistic self absorption during these kind of little interactions. But there's also wisdom in knowing how and when to leave others to their own devices. And this scene captures the truth of that fact perfectly.

Both of these characters are in the wrong and in the right. The driver, he's putting pressure on Louie, he's talking about how nice everyone he's driven for have been, with the expectation that Louie will be too. Whereas Louie isn't that person, it's just not how he's wired. He can't help that, and he shouldn't have to if he doesn't want to. It doesn't make you an asshole to care about your personal space, and your alone time. But he was unnecessarily blunt, and the way he tried to put his point across was essentially "you're not special, I don't want to put up with talking to you, because there's nothing new I can experience from you". That is extremely wrong, there are types in this world, but everyone is unique because nobody else has lived the same life in quite the same way. There's always something different, some new perspective that you just couldn't get anywhere else. Still, Louie doesn't have to talk to his fans but the least he could do is talk to the guy who's going to be driving him around. He doesn't have to go out of his way, all he has to do is maintain an air of politeness. Just like how Louie can't change who he is, neither can the driver. Why should the driver respect the wishes of Louie, when clearly he doesn't give a fuck about the driver's? That guy, he's just a normal guy, he's not famous. He doesn't live what most would call an interesting life, whereas Louie does. Louie is respected by millions, the driver is comparatively a nobody (for lack of a better word). He's got a connection to the people that are adored, and that makes him happy. He's not really saying that Louie has to do anything, he just loves that part of his job, and the fact that these people are actually nice is huge for him. That's the most interesting thing that happens to him from his perspective. He's talking about it, because he cares about it. That's good writing, it's real, most situations are a blend of wrong and right. Life ain't black and white, it's grey. Fucking great scene.

Haha... I used to be a driver like this guy. I would always try to say something to initiate conversation at the beginning of the drive, and the passenger could either reciprocate or let it fall flat. If they didn't want to talk I would leave them alone. Some people were silent the entire ride, and some people were telling me their life story within minutes.

As a passenger, which isn't often, my interactions are never the same. Sometimes I just talk it up with the driver, other times I am silent. It's all based on my mood and if I am tired out.

wow, louis c.k. is such a great actor. the way he's able to portray a smug, condescending douche bag is so lifelike!

Why is that condescending? All he did is said, "Bill's a good guy. He's very friendly. I'm glad you got to meet him, but I'm not like him, at least not tonight. I just want to be left alone." It goes with the territory of comedy actually. Offense is taken, not given, and this guy was just too easy to hurt.

Yeah, I mean, it's a very personal show, you can tell that a lot of the things that happen in the show happened to him, some are exaggerated obviously. But he is also criticizing himself with the writing.

Louie comes off so jaded and sour in this show a lot of the time. It's a wonder he just doesn't end it all. lol.
