I have much love and respect with these guys who I befriended first in 1953 in Baltimore when my band, the JAY-ROCKERS, opened for BILL HALEY and the COMETS at the DIXI BALLROOM in Gynn Oak Amusement Park. They had already left Bill iHaley in 1956 and formed THE JODIMARS before I joined the Comets as pianist replacing JOHNNY GRANDE,as featured pianist with the group., I have always wished I could have pl;ayed with these guys, who are my heroes, but by the time I joined the COMETS in 1962, the band had changed. The line up I first recorded with at AFN in Germany was: RUDY POMPELLI on Sax, DAVE HOLLY on Drums/Joey Kay & Franny Beecher on Guitar, Billy Williamson on Steel Guitar and Al Rappa on Bass, WHEN i GOT OUT OF THE ARMY IN THE MID 60 s, BILLY WILLIAMSON HAD LEFT AND FRANNY BEECHER HAD LEFT, REPLACED BY JOHNNY KAY, These were the best years of my life, I was so proud to play with the Band that invented ROCK & ROLL,,,,Joey Welz 60s Pianist with BILL HALEY'S COMETS,,,,

No you didn't . Johnny Grande told me your only contribution to the AFN studio recording was being in the room. He left in 1962 and you did not replace him. Your only connection with Haley was being in the band for 3 months in 1965. Please.

Saw the Comets in Branson, MO, in 2006. One of the best live shows I've ever seen. Had the privilege of fraternising with them during that time as we were staying in the same digs during that visit. The other thing I remenber about that show was Dick Richards on the drums; he was the personification of "Animal" from Sesame Street. So active and absilutely involved on his music. Franny Beecher had retired rom the group about a month or 6 weeks before but t didn't make any difference. They were fabulous. Even bought the T Shirt. It's now framed and hung on the wall in our home. Great memories.

With all respect to Frank Beecher, it was Danny Cedrone who played the iconic solo to Rock around The Clock. Cedrone, unfortunately lost his life after falling down the stairs in his home. Mr. Beecher replaced him, and did a fabulous job as a Comet! Having said that, Bill Haley probably had enough comets to light up the sky! lol
