This song is basically a history lesson by lyrics. He refers to people, places and events that occurred in history. It roughly starts from the 50’s and works it way to the 80s, which is when he recorded this. Powerful and very catchy as well. One of Billy Joel’s finest. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's a lot easier to do now with the advent of the internet and Google, but don't forget the "internet" as we know it, wasn't available at the time this song was written. Joel had to do a heck of a lot of research, using BOOKS to pull this together. When this song was researched and taught in schools as part of history or social studies programs, students had to do it the same way, relying on validated, factual, time tested sources of information in books, to interpret it. Now finding information is much easier, but you you have to be careful and more discerning about what you take as fact or truth. That makes the task more difficult in a lot of ways.

The song brings tears to my eyes. When it came out in 1989, I had no perspective. I hadn't lived through most of what he was talking about. Now 31 years later having lived through many sad events and the world is literally burning, the words mean much more. From one perspective, this is just what happens and it will continue to happen so don't feel sad, the other perspective is frustration that we haven't done better and keep repeating.

Iirc, the idea for the lyrics came to Joel after a conversation with a young man, who was essentially complaining that it (the 80's) was an awful time to be a young adult, and Billy was like, "I thought the same back when I was your age", to which the guy replied that at least Billy was a child during the 50's, where "nothing was going on". To which Joel was like: "Hold my beer."

The point of this song is that every generation thinks they have it tougher than the one before, but the fact is that every generation grows up in a world on fire. He wrote this song after a conversation with a young man who basically said, "growing up in the 50s, you had it easy; you never had to deal with the shit we have to handle." So Mr. Joel wrote this song to say "we had our own shit to handle, too, just like you."
