Also CS Forestors "The last nine days of the Bismarck" and Baron von Müllenheim-Rechbergs "Bismarck, a survivors story" are excellent reading. The Baron was Bismarcks 4th artillery officer and his station was the aft fire control cupola. He was the senior surviving officer. I believe he died just a couple of years ago. You get great insight into the German frame of mind during this operation. Highly recommended.

Bismarck was not without flaws (15 inch guns were not the biggest actually they were 14.8 inches, her deck armor was thin, rangefinders were not accurate in bad weather, weak stern) but with a top speed of 30.2 knots, double hull, broad stable beam, superbly trained crew and hull watertight compartmentation she was an extremely dangerous opponent.

So why do we have footage of Scharnhorst/Gneisenau in this (the triple turrets, not on any ship in the Battle of the Denmark Straits), and some other triple-turret guns firing, as well as reciprocating engine parts on ships with steam turbines? Also some footage of a Deutschland-class panzerschiff in there as well. While it's all very well to present stuff about the wonders and beauty of the Bismarck, she didn't manage a single hit on HMSs King George V, Rodney, Norfolk and Devonshire, even at close range with her entire armament intact. HMS Rodney (triple turrets at last!) reduced her to a burning hulk remarkably quickly, taking out both main and after fire control within 10 salvoes, then destroying her guns. If an enemy battleship can close to 3,000 m and pour 16" shells into the Bismarck within 40 minutes of action starting, with nothing worse than being straddled once, the battle was seriously one-sided.

Bismark rudder was damaged so it wasn't a fair fight anyway...
@wollindinamedia539
3 жыл бұрын
@@vladvah77 True, but that doesn't affect the firing capabilities of the guns. The main 15" battery was fully functional, as were the fire control systems. Similarly, the 5.9" secondary battery was fully operational, as was its fire control. After scoring two hits on HMS Hood in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were able to score seven hits on HMS Prince of Wales, but her superior design (especially armor) and good fortune (two shells failed to explode) meant that the damage was far less extensive. Yet in the final battle, Bismarck failed to score a single hit on any of the RN ships. There was no shortage of targets, the Bismarck's armament was in full working order and they had 260 armor-piercing 15" shells on board. While Bismarck straddled HMS Rodney with the second salvo, good shooting in gale-force conditions, subsequent hits on the main battery fire control systems fore (15 minutes after opening fire) and aft (three salvoes later) took them out of operation, and the first hit also included shells in the same salvo from HMS Rodney that damaged the forward guns. All four of Bismarck's main turrets were out of action 44 minutes after HMS Rodney had opened fire. Collectively, the British ships fired some 2,800 shells at Bismarck, soaring around 400 hits. As HMS Rodney was down to 3,000 yards and firing point-blank into Bismarck's superstructure, it was hard for her to miss! Bismarck had sunk just under 2 hours after HMS Rodney had opened fire. So the situation was that Bismarck started the final battle in full fighting order, as far as the guns were concerned, but was quickly blinded and then hammered into a wreck, sinking in under 2 hours. The seas were heavy and winds gale force. This affected both sides. Bismarck was unable to maneuver, but could still steam and move, albeit only in a circle.
@couteau86
12 жыл бұрын
Jo, sure ... but technically fiewed the Scharnhorst class was mature battleships. The only handicap (and the reason why they was international classifeid as battlecruisers) was that the main artillery had just a caliber from 28cm (11"). Reason was that this was the caliber himark of the Provisions of Versailles and that the 38cm (15") guns was still in investigation and not ready for service. It was even planed to convert both ships from 28cm to 38cm ... But, just by the way ^^ ;)

It doesn´t speak for this vid, that in short passages there are Scharnhorst and then Gneisenau instead of Bismarck to be seen.

Do you not feel it's a moot point, couteau? So, to follow that reasoning, the Nazi's scuttle their ship - but the outcome remains the same. Churchill's command to "sink the Bismarck" is fulfilled, albeit by German hands; and leaving thousands of sailors in the cold water. It's not a decision which they would have reached in a vacuum. It's one that could only have been made in the face of their being cornered and battered by the Royal Navy, with all hope of regaining port and safety abandoned.

That was uh???? Umm!!! Looked like a lot of different ships. I'm surprised the war footage of Hood and Bismarck was nowhere to be found in this compilation. I mean the title of this clip is Hood & Bismarck. Oh well.

The Captian of the Hood was no Royal genius! I maybe he wanted to get blown to bits ? A brand new German battle ship ! I would have shadowed the Bismark and kept my distance. The Armor on the Hood was that of heavy cruiser . The Captain again was no Royalist. Hitlers idea one German Battleship was going to dominate the Whole Atlantic Ocean against the Battle Row of Great Britain was a far away dream . Sooner or later the Royal Navy was going to get its mark on the Bismark ! X

The Hood's captain tried to close the range so his ship could fire with better odds at both the Bismark and Prinz Eugen, but they just had LOTS of bad luck to be hit by that single german shell who detonated one of their big shell magazine... war sucks, anyway!!!

It is important to remember that HMS Hood was a battle cruiser, not a battleship. Admiral of the Fleet Baron Fisher of Kilverstone, who originated the idea of battle cruisers, specified that they were not armored well enough to fight battleships. Blame for this outcome goes to the British Admiralty, which sent Hood into a battle it was not designed to fight, let alone win.

@OMBspa The Anti-Comintern Pact was a German-Japanese contract who was joined by Italy in 1937. His target was the fight against the Communist International should be (similar to the Comintern) supported by information exchange. Nothing more ... And the Tripartite Pact was just the extension of the Pact of Steel by integrate Japan (and later all other nations who join the Axis) So what you want again and again with your claim of refused weapons deliveries?

Oops! My bad. I just love battleships. I`ve got Yamato`s 1/350 scale model from Tamiya! Too bad Japanese naval technologies were very poor comparing with US or German technologies.
