Male figs are caprifigs. Since Black Madeira is actually a female fig wouldn't she be better described as the "Black Princess"? Thanks for your videos. I really like what you and Ross Raddi (young Italian guy) are doing on KZitem to benefit fig growers.

some said black madeira grew up so slowly. Some seller said black madeira UC Davis, black madeira KK, black madeira JFE were all the same. I don't know. But there are indeed some youtubers who posted videos showing their black madeira UC Davis grew so slowly. one even just got just a little taller after two years.

Your emphasis on “no dead weight!” to be tolerated among your fig trees reminds me of the parable of the barren fig tree in the gospel of Luke, chapter 13. In other words, you sound like Jesus! You’re on the same page regarding figs, in any case. 😉

I finally pulled the trigger on some black prince cuttings. One is growing two figs already. It hurt a little bit when I had to take them off 😢

Absolute fig newbie here. New sub as well. I’m in zone 9 Louisiana just north of New Orleans. My family fig tree was brown Turkey and I wasn’t a fan, my wife on the other hand grew up on Becnel’s Italian black and has been on me to add figs to my orchard. Well now is the time. I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now and am going to adopt your approach. Trial and cull. Im starting with 13 varieties, Black Madeira is one of them. Slowest cuttings to bud out but two are just starting to push green buds. With my long season I’m hoping we get to taste at least a few varieties.

That's the spirit!!! You are in a much better climate for growing figs than I am. If I can do it, I'm certain that the two of you will be successful, too! Good luck and thanks for watching! Lou Monti

Thank you for the video! I (zone 9/10) have recently acquired a Black Madeira rooted cutting and am looking forward to growing it and (after two or three growing seasons) tasting it for the first time! Posts like yours have really created anticipation for these special figs. I wonder though, if it is going to turn out to taste similar to Black Mission figs, I am familiar with those and grew up eating them ripened and harvested nearby. If you have also tasted locally grown and ripened Black Missions, how would you say they compare?

Thanks so much Lou for your always informative and encouraging videos! I live in Victoria, BC ( on Vancouver Island in Canada) in a tiny 9a zone at the southern tip of the island. I have ordered cuttings of Ronde de Bordeaux, Genovese Nero, Gisotta Nero, Ciccio Nero and Olympian to try to grow on the rooftop garden of my apartment building. I also ordered some cuttings of Black Madeira after watching your videos, but the cuttings originate in Albania, so I am somewhat uncertain of the quality as they have not yet arrived, being shipped by Internatiional shipping which I now realize is SLOW! Again, thanks for your excellent videos! Always a treat to watch. John Cobban, Victoria, BC
