The beginnings of Doom Metal. These guys were a shock to the system. They spoke the truth with bombastic authority. Growing up in post WW2 England to watching the death toll mount in Viet Nam pissed them off and didnt mind telling you so. They did all they did in the midst of flower power then disco then punk and still became the progenitors of all things metal.

Wayne , when I was a my teens back in the early 80's always thought it was a song of a junkie .. I didn't tie in the military angle til I was well into my 20's . As always great insight . Respect .

Bruce, excellent review and reaction, brother. I've been a Sabbath fan since 1970. Saw them at the Las Vegas Convention Center 71, then again at California Jam 1 in 74. Thanks for another great show.

What's your favorite Sabbath song Royce, and why?
@royceinthehouse842

@@SoulTrainBro This was very very hard to answer. Sabbath has so many excellent songs I could change my mind as time goes on, in fact I have. Was a bit of a toss up between Paranoid and Iron Man. But you asked for favorite, not Favorites. I'm going to say Iron Man because I love the story about a man who travels to the future and sees the apocalypse, when traveling back he turns into an iron creature unable to communicate and the carnage that follows.

I saw them with Dio. It wasn't Ozzy, but it was still a decent concert... it was better than not ever seeing Sabbath🤨👍

Read several things on the song origin- seeing syringes on the concert venue floor after, soldiers doing rehab in Europe after getting out of Vietnam. Either way, I think that tying specific video images to it can distract us from getting the meaning. It's about drug abuse, mainly, whether about a soldier or not. Either way, it's a powerful message, as well as an interesting groove. Great song.

BS toured Germany in the 70's, Butler saw a lot of GI's that returned from Vietnam to US bases in Germany were using heroin. Which gave him the inspiration (if you can use that word) to write this song.

Those sad war images are distracting the attention to the song and the lyrics in fact! Nice reaction, brother!

This track has little to do with war, its about drug abuse. Which includes the despondency induced drug taking associated with conflicting, especially the Vietnam War. But its about the drug abuse, not the war. Listen to War Pigs for the anti war sentiment

The video has nothing to do with the song. It's about drug use, not war. These despicable and disgusting images just take away from the artist's vision and steal the artist's YT audience. I don't support channels like that ever. I click on the official artist's releases

Exactly! I absolutely hate it when people post video images like this that have NOTHING to do with the original song. I can't believe how far down I had to scroll to find a post that exposed this!! I was a 13 yr old kid when I bought this album and had my mom listen to decipher the lyrics. Lol. She said, Honey, it's about somebody using heroin. I said, "Really? What's heroin?" 😂
