In this lecture, we'll look at chapters 1-5 of Fanon's "Black Skin, White Masks", with particular emphasis on chapters 4 and 5. This text is critical for understanding the effects of colonization on the identity of colonized individuals. This text examines what it means to be racialized and the ambiguity and nervousness that accompanies self-alienation. Please note, I use the term "negro" in this lecture only when it is present in the text and I feel the passage necessary to read in order to explicate Fanon's ideas and provide constructive and useful information for others who may be experiencing what Fanon speaks of. Please know this language is not chosen lightly and is not meant to carry any offensive connotations or personal hate to any individual or group. Enjoy!
