Unfortunately, it seems like a large number of men across the entertainment industry, in every medium, are abusers to some extent. So many have been accused of heinous acts against artists as well as women and men who aren't artists. They have power and influence. There doesn't seem to be much that folks who are a part of the industry are willing to do, until it's nearly impossible for them to not distance themselves from the assaulter. Diddy would've probably been on the BET Awards stage the other night, if the Cassie hotel footage hadn't been released. Prior to the video dropping, there was already an effort from various artists to assist in cleaning up Diddy's public reputation. So, it is what it is. If video evidence of LA Reid ever gets released, then he'll also be ostracized like Diddy; but until then, he will continue to be heralded -- as well as many toxic and dangerous others.

As a south african I do agree that Tyla's performance didn't need to give lion king vibes, and I don't know why it did because as someone who has lived in south Africa her whole life you would think they would have been able to incorporate her African Identity better, but then again, maybe she really was aiming for jungle vibes as an aesthetic and not as a visual way to affirm her Africanness. Overall, still a fantastic performance. I really enjoyed her album but I will need her to look into carving out more of an identity sonically because everything still sounded kinda boilerplate/standard and easily digestible. Like, yes she did touch on amapiano but our local artists have pushed the genre way further than what she's presenting to western audiences.

The issue with Tyla is she 98% backed by either Americans or people from the UK. Majority of her team is “western” I think this is why she was thrown under the bus and under prepared in the breakfast club interview and why there’s been such a huge push for her in the states. Her team struggles when it comes to pushing her essence which is that she is SA. Hopefully in the future she will gain more creative control and be able to present her identity better

I think the tiger was just a cute thing they saw on IG and decided to incorporate. Technically, a lion or leopard would have been more appropriate. I think its ridiculous to be miffed about the animal theme in just one performance. Lots of other artists have had this theme from Taylor Swift to Amerie to Shakira. Because its a cute theme! Anyway, Kruger Park is one of South Africas most famous features. Yes, some ignorant people assume that Africa is only grass skirts and animals but thats on them. Some people think black America is just ghetto but that doesn't keep black artists from tapping into that aspect of themselves.

South African here. I just want to comment on the imagery (clothing) put on Tyler. Most ethnic groups in South Africa have traditional clothes, pottery, and art linked to their ethnicity. But because colored (mixed race) people come from diverse cultures, it's understandable that they don't have a distinctive traditional wear or image. This could be part of the reason why they went for these imageries for her. This doesn't mean that colored people don't have a rich culture because they do. I have beautiful positive experience with them. And I hope thorough research is done when covering this topic because it won't be fair to them if we project our cultural views and experiences on them.❤

Actually Coloured South Africans belong to an ethnic group of Hottentots, Mixed, Sun and Khoi-Khoi tribes. The South African coat of arms "ǃke e꞉ ǀxarra ǁke" is written in Khoisan, a Coloured language in homage for these tribes being the first inhabitants of Southern Africa, and the ties that bind the as the oldest living racial ethnic group on earth. Him and Keke Palmer too a tea, and Normani would have slayed tribute, but apparently, BET doesn't have her or her agent's number

I feel like if there’s room for cultural analysis of Tyla’s African primitivism, then there’s room to talk about Sexxy Red’s hood primitivism and how Black Americans eat it up and embody it

Tylas fans are called "Tigers" so the theme of tigers make sense. South Africa is also wild life rich with game reserves, so there is nothing primitive about highlighting its positives. South Africans still do have race issues, but it is not as amplified as Black Americans that see everything through racial lenses. Tyla is her authentic self, and unproblematic. She had a great performance, and can put on an amazing show.

"not as amplified as black Americans that see everything through racial lenses" 😂 ahh this is probably why the colonizers in your country still own most of your land and wealth? , I mean if South Africans are cool with black people in their own country being treated still as second class citizens then I'm cool with it, you guys aren't known as "the most unequal society in the world" for no reason, what a shame

Honestly it was a good show. I actually watched it this time. The women really killed it. The men need to STEP IT UP. I’m still trying to finish listen to Megan’s album. I loved her when she released FEVER, I was rooting and still am but there’s something missing. I agree. I don’t go back all the time to her songs.

There was a conversation on Twitter about BET using Durand Bernarr as a Joke about ppl auditioning for the Usher tribute when he’s one of the few male Vocalist who could do him justice. I also think Luke James and Avery Wilson could’ve given a good performance. I understand why Usher had all the best black pop/R&B girls leading his performance because his fanbase is primarily women but I do think this mindset is a little dismissive of his male fans specifically queer men.

Yes, that intro to Jump while she was descending, you could hear praise singers speaking in isiZulu. She also did a Zulu traditional dance just before Gunna's verse.

I think she's a very talented artist. But when it comes down to that presence of performing live, she always gives me cheerleader vibes. Like she doesn't have that on. Sure she can dance live, and she can sing live. But neither of them are that great enough to hold weight.

I really enjoyed Victoria Monet's performance, I was just let down by the vocals. I know it's not easy to control your vocals especially with that expert level of dancing that was on display, but they sounded incredibly shaky at times, and that's super important for me enjoying a performance. Everything else was a 10 though. She truly is the best doing it now and she will always be famous

26:05 I was surprised that so many people were surprised by the Tyla tiger body paint trick. That had been a popular internet video meme for a decade (I understand that I could be on the animal lover algorithm 😂so maybe that's why I was familiar) I was surprised, however, when those same tiger body paint girls got up and joined the dancers. That was a slick addition to the trick.

I wonder where is the men rnb singers of today? None are getting noticed or pushed in mainstream music. Because we have many female black rnb singers doing a tribute to usher and none of the men can? There’s no black body groups either? What happened because before we had Jackson 5, new edition, b2k in the 2000s.

I can’t stand Sexxy Red. She is a horrible representation for black women. They keep pushing her on to us and I’m tired of it. I also don’t like Tyla either. On a positive note, Chloe, Victoria Monet, Lauryn Hill, and her son were my favorite performances.
