Normani needs a better social media manager. Coco was on Tik Tok getting folks doing duets w/their own lyrics and showing her personality. Normani is thoughtful and interesting (not to mention a beautiful young woman) but she needs someone to mediate her interactions with the public who has a finger on the pulse of culture. A smart team would be putting her in the right spots while shielding her from every couch critic with something to say and a Twitter account. Her being on the Terrell show tonight was a great first step but I think they are lacking in that area for her.

When Ariana was FIRST coming up, back during her first album.....She used to get on Tumblr and sing. Post tons of videos, talk about her music. Even if she's not being booked, she can be online working. Unless she is being explicitly told not to post online, which I don't think is happening. Because the company wants money. If the company isn't helping drum up interest, it's Normani's job to get the people talking about her! This is NOT the only celeb this has happened to. Tons of the black girls don't get ANY support. They have to get their own name out there. I just don't have much sympathy for her. I give her grace because of her family. But you can't have a career without working. Look at Muni Long! She's been really pushing. Her AND Victoria. They've been pushing for the fame they have for years.

I think it’s really interesting to compare Chappell Roan and Normani. I completely agree with how you said this is Chappell’s moment and she was completely ready for it and had an artist vision which she executed perfectly. Arguably I think in 2019 Normani really had her moment but wasn’t prepared for it, she was on tour with Ariana Grande and everyone was seated for motivation then Normani stepped back and disappeared after the VMA’s. Normani can work her way back to that momentum but I think in late 2019-early 2020 if she released an album it would’ve been more commercially successful then Dopamine is doing now.

I've been saying I want to hear her do a cover of Jessica Simpson's "I Think I'm in Love," because I think it would fit her voice. The sound she's going for is just way too dark for her to CONSISTENTLY do it. Some of the songs on that album would have been a better fit for Chloe's album, and some of the best moments on the album came from when she could use her mid/upper/head/falsetto registers or songs that are very melody driven where she can just float across the beat, songs like "Take My Time," "Candy Paint," and "Wild Side."

On Normani, the rollout, all of that. Not to sound like cope or excuses, but just some thoughts. I wish so much that this album had come with visuals, live performances, physical albums, a lil tour - a proper era with proper hype. Ultimately I am glad we at least have this body of work and the music is really good. The actual songs are there (the pop vs R&B conversation is exhausting tbh). I was a huge 5H stan, mostly for Mani at first even when they were making Radio Disney ass music, I really liked the "Reflection" album. And I was glad when that one member left bc I actually really liked the 4 members (glad I got to see 4H live, and that they released one album). I still follow all 4 and I've watched some of their podcasts, interviews, etc. over the years. Not one of those girls likes talking about 5H times beyond yay good times fun songs thanks to the fans, what little they say it is seriously mostly unprocessed trauma. What Kim says about the Ebro interview - Normani looks shell-shocked - I think fr everything she's experienced in the industry from 5H days and on is just like seriously traumatic. And being made into a meme regarding the album release, I think as silly as it is to us online, this kind of bothers artists (Dua talked about the meme about her though it ultimately motivated her to step it up) and can be discouraging. Also when it comes to long delays of albums, I think of the British singer Raye and her whole situation with her former record label where she was signed for 7 years doing features, switching to EDM, writing songs to give away to other artists, etc. but then ultimately spoke out about this, went independent and released an absolutely fantastic album last year and recent single (seriously big recommend to check out "My 21st Century Blues" and "Genesis". I don't think everyone has her level of vision but there's just a lot of behind the scenes bullshit and it's the norm not the exception for most artists. It's probably a huge gamble to talk about. The music industry is so evil fr. Overall since X factor, all the time Normani was being "humbled", put down, having her confidence broken - in her vocals especially, as well as being bullied by racist "fans" (of the other group member). I observed this happen and then she'd get some shine in songs, MVs and lives, get attention from people, get a confidence boost but then this process would repeat. I think with all the memes and flop talk, even without the group she's had the same thing happen. Honestly idk if she'll ever want to be super open about these things. I think her confidence is low overall and this discourse hasn't helped. But I'm still glad we got the music. Hope people get to hear it and give her some streams lol.

As good as Dopamine was, it has very little to say imho: it’s pretty pedestrian R&B, with generic lyrical themes, and pleasant but unremarkable vocal performances. Nothing moves the needle (for me). I watch Normani interviews and she’s so inhibited...very media trained answers that don’t say much….she seems averse to nurturing her fanbase on socials (which she can do without a millions dollar marketing budget). Then I see Chappell Roan….great writing, great vocals, strong visual aesthetics, bursting with personality and charisma, she’s interesting, she’s exciting, she’s infectious! She’s ready, despite all the setbacks she faces, she’s ready. It just felt like a stark contrast from Normani. She does have the same problem Dua does, but Dua has much bigger hits and is headlining Glastonbury so… 😬

I know you mean well, but please be serious. Victoria was clawing her way up. She had very little name recognition when Jaguar II dropped. Before the launch of Jaguar II, she wasn't connected to a multiplatinum girl group born from a huge TV show. She hadn't performed at a major award show. In fact, BET said she was too new to perform last year. She hadn't won any awards. She did not have two platinum singles and a gold single. She did not have people consistently asking for an album for six years, to the point that she had to make wheresthedamnalbum.com a joke before her album launch. They've had completely different careers.

Victoria also didn’t have the expectations Normani has. Victoria was in the background writing hits for Ariana grande, little mix, Fifth harmony, TI, etc. Normani was deemed the Beyoncé of the group before she even went solo and it hurt her career because that’s a lot of pressure to put on an emerging artist.

According to Normani's Terrell interview the candy paint video is finished. Not sure when it will be released though. It does feel like there isnt a solid plan for the roll out of this album. I want her to find a new label so badly. While I can tell she is more proud of this album as a whole there are songs like "take my time" that she clearly doesnt like and wild side was obviously added for numbers. The label wants her to be pop when she clearly wants to be an r&b artist.

Hey Kim!!! I hope all is well❤. But pertaining to Normani, there are so many variables to why this album failed. While it’s a solid debut album and I enjoy 1/2 of the songs, Normani should’ve dropped this in the era of 2019-2021. The reception would be so much better. 2. If this was the opportune time for her and the label to drop this year, right after the album reveal, 1:59 should’ve came that same week. Don’t make us wait 2 months for an album track. 3. Even better if Normani led with Candy Paint and dropped a visual same day. This is the song your fans have been begging for so why not lead the album with this. 4. Since the budget wasn’t there, she should’ve took a page outta JT book and do guerrilla marketing. I should’ve seen dopamine everywhere on her KZitem giving us outtakes of making the album, dance videos of her with Sean Bankhead to candy paint, and even playing into the hotline with texts. 5. Dopamine could’ve been a sickening EP in 2020/2021. Wild Side, Waves, All Yours, Insomnia, Big Boy and Still are perfect for an ep and throw Candy Paint as a bonus track. This would’ve allowed her to curate a sound that pleases the fans and her while constructing the album later. It worked great for Coco Jones.

I think Normani may be too much of a perfectionist and anxious to be an artist who connects with her fans despite the (very understandable) setbacks and shit happening behind the scenes. If she's not willing to pull a chloexhalle and perform on some tennis court or pull a Raye and open up about mental health, connect w others about that... then I fear for her ambitions

I know this is an old video so you'll probably never see this comment but honestly the comment you made about "real lesbians/bisexuals" or whatever really rubs me the wrong way. I wish I was naive enough to not even know what you're implying, but to be so dismissive and cruel even if it was done in the name of a joke, then you want to comment on and appreciate LGBTQ media, it kind of rubs me the wrong way. Straight people can be so blase and again honestly fucking cruel sometimes about people's sexualities. Y'all have had a socially accepted space carved out for you to navigate your feelings and your journeys without being told 24/7 that you are wrong and deviant for existing. Give people who label themselves as bisexual a bit of grace before commenting on their personal business? I know when you're live your mind must think a million things a minute, one snide thing you said off the cuff doesn't represent your thoughts on the queer community or go against the allyship you've displayed in your other lives and videos. But I do think it kind of reflects a straight privilege where it might not be that serious from your pov, it can actually have a demoralizing effect on a person who might not be comfortable in their bisexuality. I'm not a woman but I have my own experiences regarding this that I won't get into, but when I hear off the cuff remarks from straight people I know similar to yours, it feels like I'm being put down. I don't want to police you or condemn you too harshly, I love your videos and have been watching you for years. In the off chance you ever get the time to read this, I hope you can understand why these sort of jokes aren't really humorous unless you're another straight person (most of the time).

And I wasn't implying that your comment specifically is what could potentially cause a person to hurt emotionally to such a serious degree, moreso the implications of saying stuff like that in your day to day life and how it contributes to that implicitly hostile environment against LGBT people. Allyship shouldn't just be about supporting our right to exist, but supporting the right to how we navigate our existence. I hope that makes sense. Final edit: I do apologize if I seem harsh in my first comment. I don't have a following as large as yours and never will, so I cannot conceptualise how plain annoying it must be to receive nitpicky comments like these on a regular basis when you are also trying to keep up with stuff like the election. Just quite passionate about these topics! Glad you enjoyed Chappell's album as much as I did.

I’m a huge fan of Kimberly’s and I respect her immensely. I always look forward to her takes, and I look forward to future videos. I wanted to provide my perspective as a bisexual woman who loves Chappell’s music. I think anyone who’s come out to their family, who’s dreamed of living away, moving to a place where you can be your full self, sees themself in her lyrics. I had experiences with my mother when I told her I was bisexual, and Pink Pony Club makes me cry and smile every time I hear it. The resilience of “I’m gonna keep on dancing…” like, I’m going to keep on being my authentic queer self even though I can still hear the voices of doubt from far away. The feelings of exploring your sexuality, whatever that may be, are front and foremost on the record. I have no doubt that it touches lesbians/other queer women on a different level. I noticed Chappell’s skyrocket seems to be at least correlated with a lot of challenging emotions regarding bisexuality, especially this Pride month. I personally have dated different genders and am currently partnered with a man, and bisexuals are often asked to give a history of their dating to “prove” their sexuality. Sexuality is attraction, queerness is identity. This is a complicated conversation, but I think it’s worth noting that many if not the majority of songs on this album were written by Chappell while she was in a relationship with a man. I just wanted to provide a genuine, respectful differing perspective. I think we can relate to Chappell on different levels, and I relate to her experience in exploring and celebrating her queerness, even while she was partnered with a man, and I’m excited for her queer journey to evolve, and happy for the sapphic representation. And the lesbians deserve this representation and celebration. Bisexual women are attracted to multiple genders, men often being one of them, and are often still attracted to women even while partnered with a man. Different couples face this differently. Bisexual men also are attracted to men, and women, plus more at times (even though they’re often said to be gay in disguise). Very much looking forward to more content from Kimberly and am always appreciative to hear her insight❤

Normani has talked about having to pay for most of the “Wild Side” video with her own money. That leads me to believe that she hasn’t really had her label’s backing and hasn’t really had a budget since “Motivation”. Normani has to take at least a bit of the blame. Labels wanna see you willing to do the work and commit the grind. For whatever reasons, Normani hasn’t shown them that. But at the same time, it’s apparent that they wanted her to lean more pop and hasn’t really been pushing her or giving her a budget in years. It’s a messy situation. The album itself is passable and has some standout tracks, but it does play it very safe. And you just can’t put out your first album with no visuals or performances. If she really, really wants it I can still see her getting it. But she’s gonna have to put in that work.
@Romy2112

The video for Wild Side ended up costing over a million dollars so I don’t think that we can blame the label for not approving this budget. Wild Side has not even gone platinum, proving that spending this much money on the video alone was not a smart decision business wise. Normani has talked about being a perfectionist and I wonder if she means by this that she only wants the best of the best. This would explain why she never released a mixtape and/or went on a small venue tour to gain traction like her peers did. Or why she hasn’t released a video with the current album. Maybe the budget she was offered was again not enough for her.

Normani has said in previous interviews that she doesn’t engage in social media because of the volume of criticism and racial slurs she receives from the public. If she did post on TikTok or other social platforms I doubt she would have comments turned on. Which again opens her up to more criticism. If she responds back to her critics she risks being perceived as “angry and black.” I don’t fault her for wanting to protect her mental health. Similarly Beyoncé was also mocked for verbal interviews. I recall people mocking her country accent and her less than stellar remarks. Now she only does print interviews and documentaries. If we want sensitive artists like Normani and Beyoncé to relate to us, we have to provide a space for them to feel safe enough to be vulnerable.

being signed to rca doesn’t help normani. rca has been known to sabotage their artists. also i’ve seen other people say this and i have to agree: rca probably wanted a pop star and didn’t want to support the more r&b direction normani was going in. they probably wanted her to continue to do more music like motivation but her new direction inspired less confidence in them wanting to invest in her. also even during her interviews she still sounds super critical of the songs on this album. even if she’s still not confident in them, she should still try to sell the album and talk about how she felt these were the right songs for the project and how it’s really a work she’s proud of. the public wants to be reassured that you put out the best you had to offer in your debut album. it’s like if you don’t believe in the songs yourself, why should the public?
