It isn’t a cheap quality camera and isn’t made of plastic. It is actually made from a carbon fiber polycarbonate composite which ensures it is extremely strong and sturdy whilst also being incredibly lightweight. This really is an incredible camera for its affordable price, materials, best UI in industry, colour science, ergonomics, screen, ports, included FREE DaVinci Resolve Studio and Blackmagic RAW. Being a cinema camera, the pocket 4k will likely commonly sit in a cage so I don’t see the flip out screen as that big of a problem. In terms of the battery life, there is a new battery grip which offers over 2hrs of additional charge and you can record to SD cards in BRAW. The file size of the footage should be the smallest possible in the industry for RAW files by taking advantage of BRAW. The Wise PTS-256 is a really compact SSD which is great for this camera as well. Great coverage of this really innovative and popular camera. Glad you joined to the Blackmagic camera club 🎬🎥. Peace.

It's not a carbon fiber base. It's a polycarbonate (Plastic) with flakes of Carbon Fiber embedded throughout. This is not the same as a carbon fiber body. It's still plastic. This manufacturing technique can, at times, produce a stronger more flame resistant plastic. But it's still plastic and will resemble normal plastic in it's characteristics more than a carbon fiber.

This is the first presentation that I've seen which makes a very clear point that everything about the BMPCC4K must be taken in the context that it's a cinema camera and so shouldn't be compared to DSLRs/mirrorless cameras that can do video. Kudos for that. I wish more reviewers would do the same. Once that point is established, the BMPCC4K makes complete sense. I'm starting to do video and received mine in Oct 2018 with that fully in mind.

I love the Metabone XL coupled with a 2.8 and faster. Coupled 4/3 crop (which is larger than Micro 4/3) will end you up with a 1.21 crop which come pretty damn close to a full frame which would have made a lot of your shots pop with crisp subjects and creamy bokeh. I also notice you didn’t use any ND filters which is a must in the conditions you were shooting in. Those shots would have completely popped with minimal clipped highlights. Also I only shoot in BMRAW due to the small file sizes. The quality of the compressed footage is incredible. Plus BRaw at 12:1 is smaller than Prores so I think you should definitely re-think the use of Prores when attempting to get the best images. Anyway, thanks for the review and I hope too see you using it more and I am excited to see what you come up with in the future.

Spot on, this isn't like every other consumer camera. Blackmagic has superior color science, dynamic range, and file options. You have to be more than an amateur to fully utilize a cam like this. If you are looking to do alot of run and gun, easier color editing, pick up and go shooting, buy an a7iii or GH5.

Cool vid. I was very close to buying this camera, but it was sold out. Was planning to use it for weddings, but I wound up changing my mind once I thought about all the rigging I would need for it. Wound up sticking with my JVC ls300 for now, and also bought a Sony nx80. Gotta be fast at weddings. Anyway great insights.

You no longer have to get a v-lock battery to power this camera. You can now buy a cheap battery plate that will take Sony NPF batteries if you want to keep the form factor small. They are available from eBay for around £25.00. It has made this camera so much more convenient to use. It plugs directly into the weipu 2 pin power connection. This frees up your usb-c port for an ssd. Also you can keep an lpe6 battery inside the camera for extended shooting time. Also when your Sony battery runs out it works as a buffer whilst you change NPF batteries for uninterrupted power delivery.

Awesome review as always. This is a big boy camera that definitely requires a specialized skill set to use, especially if you wanna fully utilized all the features and functions of this beast. Definitely will be picking this up in the distant future. Also, I'd love to see you review the Lumix S1 and see how it pairs up against your GH5.

1. V-mount batt on a handheld rig with a touch screen viewer which can house a ssd card… All your issues resolved instantly… In film, this is a no brainer… Even if you are a minimalist…. 2. File size… That’s just product of circumstance if you want better quality… It’s not an issue with professional level M1 macs…. Rappers just don’t want to pay market rate for high end music videos quality… If they did, the accessory list wouldn’t be such a pain… But you covered that based on your expectations coming through the door… I just wanted to let you know that there is an easy solution to all of those…

Also using mine with a Ronin M and a Moza Air first generation. Get a half cage from smallrig and its possible to mount it on almost any gimbal. Don't need a V mount battery to run this camera only a Sony NP-F750 5200mAh with an adaptor and a fresh canon battery inside will run for up to 3 hours.

It’s a great camera cinematically but I mean I get where you’re coming from. I’m a filmmaker and video director based in Lagos Nigeria. My first time using it I ran into the same battery problem which was a real bummer at the time. I also noticed that when I would shoot on colder days it lasted just a little longer than hot days. I easily Ran through 10 batteries on a shoot, luckily for me I don’t tend to overshoot except when necessary... but still I had to be prepared for future projects so that’s when I started filming with compact batteries. If you’re reading this and have plans on buying this camera at some point you probably should get it with that. In my opinion that’s your best bet.

Love mine. Used SD cards when on a gimble and SSD when controlled set environment. Full on cinema camera and people need to understand cinema cameras first to use this camera correctly. It's not a camera for taking to a picnic for snapshots.

Harris Entertainment cheers man for the response. I don’t want the clinical video look but there is also the reliability factor and how much gear to carry to consider too. Not sure how heavy a gimbal, modded battery pack, monitor (w/drive) and the camera would be and how easy it is to use over a couple of hours.

In my opinion, the only problem with this camera is the battery life. All other issues can be fixed by rigging and getting the right equipment. And factoring the price, we all cant really expect a RED-like form factor, battery, sensor, etc to be available in the BMPCC4K.

There seems to be a lot to love about this camera but I just can't help but think that the form factor was a mistake. The guts of this camera could easily fit in a small camcorder body with a traditional flip-out monitor on the side, battery door in the rear, and room to easily add on an EVF as an optional accessory. They call it a "pocket" camera but it actually has almost identical dimensions to the OG 2.5K camera, which is notorious for being a giant, awkward brick. You would think they'd know better by now since they made the URSA Mini, which is awesome. Why wasn't this designed as an URSA Micro?
@gfilm6870

It is a cinema camera which will literally end up in cages the majority of the time. It doesn't need to be compact b/c its not used for photography and run and gunning. Flip-out monitors would be problematic in a cage. Sure its on the larger size but the price compensates for this significantly! You get more for less money.

For battery life, people have been adapting power packs for recharging your cell phone with a dummy battery to plug into the camera, and you've got 1 battery that will last 8 hours. I have every plan to get this camera and have been learning as much as I can. I used a RED and this camera does the same thing for oh so much less.

Great, honest opinion. I'm about to buy the Canon 16-35mm f/4 IS for mine. Is the IS helpful on the P4K? I can have mine on the Moza Air 2, no problem, but I'm sick of setting up gimbals. I'm hoping the Canon 16-35mm f/4 IS will at least eliminate micro jitters. That'll allow me much more freedom.
