Yes, I know this. I like referring to it as the V&A Museum. It was originally known as the South Kensington Museum. It was founded in 1852, after the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851. In 1857, it moved to its current home on Exhibition Road. About 40 years after it was founded, the museum was renamed to the Victoria & Albert Museum (or V&A Museum for short).

I have only just discovered Blackwork, so watching lots of videos. When and how do you apply beeswax to the threads?
@LynneFairchild
Жыл бұрын
I think it's based on personal preference (some don't apply beeswax at all, some apply it to the ends, while others apply beeswax to the entire thread). Personally, I like to apply beeswax to the ends of the threads, to help prevent the thread from fraying. As for how and when, I find demonstrating to be easier than explaining. At 2:39 in this video, you will find me applying the beeswax to the thread end (right before I start embroidering): kzitem.info/news/bejne/rp6jk4OZqHt5en4 Also in the video mentioned above, you will find how I locate historical patterns, recreate the patterns on the computer, and then step by step of how I embroider the pattern with silk thread on linen fabric. Hope this helps!

I thought it was Spanish but they were influenced by the Moors . V&A Museum is so fascinating.

When first learning about blackwork embroidery from the Tudor period, it was originally referred to as Spanish work because of Catherine of Aragon (Henry VIII's first wife). After his marriage to Anne Boleyn (his 2nd wife), the embroidery was renamed as blackwork. So, it is correct to refer to this embroidery as Spanish. I agree about V&A Museum being fascinating!

For a step by step guide on how to get your embroidery started, please check out kzitem.info/news/bejne/qK18nKSbg2uhiG0 To first learn how to do blackwork, I suggest working with cross stitch fabric and silk thread (silk thread is easy to work with and historically accurate too). After you have learned the technique, then graduate to using linen fabric. Slate frames are historically accurate, but hoop frames are easier for transport (and cheaper to obtain). Hope this helps!

Do you have anywhere you’d recommend for slate frames? x

I would recommend looking at Etsy, depending on how much you want to spend. There are a few currently listed on there. For example, there is currently an 8x10 for $45 at www.etsy.com/listing/688210897/embroidery-slate-frame-8x10-inch?ref=shop_home_active_8&frs=1&crt=1
