BLAX Museum is a talent showcase created by Cleveland writer and cultural facilitator Michelle R. Smith that is open to all forms and dedicated to honoring notable Black figures in American history and culture. It is an annual event featuring Black artists from Northeast Ohio that pay homage through original art and honorary performances and presentations.
For BLAX Museum 2022, musician Theresa J. May and photographer Emanuel Wallace are paying tribute to Cleveland photographer Allen E. Cole.
A professional photographer in Cleveland's Black community, Allen E. Cole (Sept 1, 1883-Feb 6, 1970) generated over 27,000 negatives throughout his career, which are currently housed in a collection at the Western Reserve Historical Society and showcased in the book Somebody, Somewhere, Wants Your Photograph. Cole was born in Kearneysville, WV, graduated from Storer College, and worked as a railroad porter and cook in Cincinnati before moving to Cleveland and becoming a waiter at the Cleveland Athletic Club. At the Athletic Club, Cole met Joseph Opet, manager of Frank Moore Studios, who introduced him to photography. He worked as Opet's assistant for six years before opening a studio in his home in 1922. Throughout the Great Depression, as individual orders declined, Cole did commercial and commission work, contributed to the Cleveland Call & Post, and earned prizes in state and local exhibitions. He was the only Black member of the Cleveland Society of Professional Photographers for many years. Cole was buried in Highland Park Cemetery in Cleveland, OH.
