BLAX Museum is a talent showcase created by Cleveland writer and cultural facilitator Michelle R. Smith that is open to all forms and dedicated to honoring notable Black figures in American history and culture. It is an annual event featuring Black artists from Northeast Ohio that pay homage through original art and honorary performances and presentations.
For BLAX Museum 2022, artist Donnie Lynee is paying tribute to the legendary Sarah Vaughan, known as one of the greatest singers in jazz.
Known as "Sassy" or "The Divine One," Sarah Vaughan (Mar 27, 1924-Apr 03, 1990), with her astounding tone and vibrato, helped popularize the art of jazz singing and influenced generations of vocalists following her. Vaughan began singing in church in her native Newark, NJ and taking extensive piano lessons at age seven. After winning the amateur talent contest at the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem, Vaughan was hired by Earl Hines for his big band as a second pianist and singer in 1943. She then joined Billy Eckstine's band in 1944, the same year she made her first record under her own name. After leaving Eckstine, Vaughan worked for a short time in the John Kirby band then became a primarily solo vocalist. As such, throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she worked with greats like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, who often sang her praises. In the 1960s, Vaughan recorded with Count Basie, Benny Carter, Frank Foster, and Quincy Jones, among others. It was during this time that she became internationally celebrated for her talent, and her voice became recognized as one of the most versatile in all of jazz, with a range that went from baritone to soprano.
Donnie Lynee is an R&B, soul, and jazz singer hailing from Cleveland, OH. She studied classical violin, vocal music, and jazz art at the Cleveland School of the Arts and writing and recording with the S.T.A.R.S. Program in Columbus, OH.
