singer debbie harry said she wrote it for the creepy stalker-fan types she attracted, because she was also a playboy bunny and posed for them prior to blondie's success.

Blondie was huge back in the day and she ended up having to dodge multiple stalkers and crazy fans. I think the lyrics were actually taken verbatim from an actual letter from an obsessed fan.

People STILL think it's a love song. I mentioned on a board awhile back that Sting's politics finally caught up with him and he never mentions that the song is about government monitoring you every move. I had to laugh at people telling me I didn't know what I was taling about and that it was a great love song.

Debbie Harry is a lot of things but creepy isn't one of them. If the song creeps you out then it's done the job of relating how she felt like being stalked. This song relates what it felt like to her. Now, it's time to release the punishing attack of Pretenders led by the incomparable Chrissie Hynde. The video of MIDDLE OF THE ROAD should be enough to showcase this band. And then, there is also the classic, BRASS IN POCKET. Meanwhile, keep enjoying the music. We'll keep watching you. One Way or Another. Ha Ha !

When this first came out nobody really took the words seriously it was all about the beat and rocking out. It's the same with a lot of the older tunes not all mind you but a lot had silly or nonsensical lyrics but had great guitars and good drum beats that got people off their behinds and rocking on the dance floor, oh and selling vinyl.

Total stalker song (notice the police car siren sound at the end?), like the Police song (music group!) Every Breath You Take, which is the opposite of the same band's Don't Stand So Close To Me! I think we oldsters had a more benign view (it wasn't even illegal!) of what is now referred to as "stalking"... It was seen as kind of romantic to have such a devoted fan. The Police tune referred to above was definitely seen as dreamy rom-com by the gals, cuz it was Sting singing it. I hope that you'll listen to more Blondie, cuz there's a huge amount of great tunes by them. I recommend, for something very different and groundbreaking, Rapture: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0X55yodtiGRla5w

Also check out "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" a great Morrissey song with a stalker theme. Back in the 70's and 80s, the idea of a stalker wasn't as big a deal as it is now. But in the early 80s, a few well know incidents such as the murder of Dominique Dunne brought headlines to the topic of crazy-exes and fan stalkers.

Debbie Harry (the lead singer of Blondie) wrote this after being stalked in real life by a crazy man. Unfortunately in an unrelated incident she and her boyfriend were the victims of a home invasion in NYC (before they were both famous), he was tied up, she was raped and they were robbed. But I’m this song she’s not the creep, she’s singing it from the point of view of her stalker.

Just remember, song writers do not necessarily share the viewpoints of the song they write. They sometimes express feelings from a completely different perspective than their own. Think Sting with Every Move You Make or John Lennon with Happiness is a warm Gun.
@An_Cat_Dubh

John Lennon did not actually think he was a walrus. ;) Yeah, it's interesting how many people seem to think songs are a personal confessional, and nothing else. Professional songwriters often write from the point of view of one of more characters. And that's just one technique for creating lyrics...

Blondie was great and had one of the first top 40 hits featuring a rap section (Rapture). A very creative and innovative band for its time. Lead vocalist is Debbie Harry (people often mistakenly call her Blondie, but that's the name of the band. And you're right. This song was meant to be as creepy as it sounded. Some other great Bkondie hits to react to: Heart of Glass Call Me Rapture Tide is High (very pop-ish, but catchy and a big hit for the band). Love your channel... and your smile!

This came from their best album, "Parallel Lines", but this isn't my favourite track from that - I reserve "Hanging On The Telephone" for that privilege. Blondie are a great band that are actually still going to this day. I keep hoping they'll get back to the level they had in the 70's/80's, but each time I listen to their most recent albums, I just get a bit disappointed.

POP was made for 13-15yr olds... Back then, girls stalked their guys...it was their way of showing affection, somewhat akin to the boys pulling girls hair before girls stopped being bad. So you find lots of POP artist from the 50's 60's 70's & early 80's referencing this behavior in a different context than the creepy stalker perv context of today. Musically you can tell this was the time period that people like Joey Ramone, Ric Ocasek, Johnny Rotten, and Chrissie Hynde were all hanging out together with Blondie. You can hear it clearly in the drums and guitar, but also in the tempo and vocal effects.
