Ireland was the perfect place. The Romans used Ireland like a penal colony. Like the British used Australia as a penal colony. When Roman couldn't Romanize Celts, the Celts were sent to Ireland. This is why thd Romans never set foot on Ireland. The Celt lived off the land, but no so much off the sea. When over population occurs, then one kingdom would got to war with another kingdom. This would kill off the excess population. DOES THIS SOUND BARBARIC TO YOU? Think about today. The over population gets killed off by abortion. So which is more barbaric, an 18 year old going to fight to the death with another 18 year old. The victors live, and the vanquished die. Today the excess population is aborted. Never getting a chance to see the sun. Never getting a chance to use his skills or luck to survive. As for me, I rather be a BARBARIC, then to slaughter in the womb.

This is great for explaining the context of the action taken by Silken Thomas in relation to Henry VIII - and shows that , despite Poyning's law , there was not realistically English law of the land until the time later than the English wars of the roses had been settled - with the Tudors in control and ripe to make changes.

Well the bloodiest battle was the battle of Aughrim, knockdoe was the bloodiest medieval battle, irish battle tactics prior to the Anglo Normans relied more on skirmish tactics, the title was just to big so i had to correct myself in the description.

Great info on a battle I’ve never heard of. I feel that so much of our history is either being lost or forgotten. Recent research into my own surname “ Mimnagh “ apparently means “munster man” ie someone from munster. The name is predominantly from north Longford/ Leitrim and not a common name. My research shows that the Mimnagh’s were only called MIMNAGH when they arrived in this area. Previously they were Kennedy, possibly descendants of Cennetig, a nephew of Brian boru. As O’Kennedy’s are noted as participants in this battle then perhaps it’s around this time period that they settled in Longford/Leitrim.
The Burkes were pretty Gaelic by this point also thier army's would consist of Irish men, I always say the English never conquered Ireland the Irish conquered Ireland for the English.

@Clans_Dynasties

The numbers for Moira are believed to be greatly exaggerated, but it was a big battle. Technically, Aughrim was the bloodiest, Knockdoe did have a high death toll for the time period, but ultimately, the title was a cheeky bit of clickbait.
@johndevlin4318

@@Clans_Dynasties One historian said it was “the greatest battle, whether we regard the numbers engaged, the duration of the combat, or the stake at issue, ever fought within the bounds of Ireland.” The defeated armies fled in the direction of the Killultagh Woods, near Ballinderry. When the Ulster Railway was being built, great quantities of bones were discovered. These are believed to have been from the men and horses killed in the battle. Just below the kilns there once was a mound which a few years ago was “discovered to consist almost entirely of human remains; evidently of those who had been slain in some great battle”. (Quoted by Eileen Cousins in “Like and Evening gone” - a history of Magheralin Church). There are local townlands that got their names from it. Field of slaughter etc.

@@Clans_Dynasties Some of the names of the townlands in the area originate from the Battle: Aughnafosker means the ‘field of slaughter’, Carnalbanagh means ‘the Scotsman’s grave’, Kilwarlin means ‘wood of slaughter.’

Thanks for the video, interesting stuff indeed. But the bloodiest battle in Irish history was definitely the battle of aughrim in 1691. By the way a suggestion for your videos would be the battle of the yellow Ford in County Armagh. This was the greatest defeat ever inflicted by the Irish over English forces. This battle was hugely significant in that the chieftains of Ulster practically wiped out the English army and may even be said to have indirectly lead to the plantation of Ulster, such was English determination that it wouldn’t happen again.

@@vestty5802 the Irish ancestor concerned left County Cork Southern Ireland in 1848 to escape the potato famine and if they stayed they would have probably died.
