Sharing in case it may help you or someone else… I’ve battled my weight the last thirty years and have spent many of them trying to out exercise my weight/diet. Late June 2023 I made an abrupt diet change; ultra low carb, gluten free, intermittent fasting. I weighed 353 then. A month ago I weighed in at 247. I was able to do this while dealing with a torn meniscus in my knee and complications from surgery for it. Bottom line I cut out all sugar, bread, pasta and rice. I don’t eat food with long labels. I eat baked chicken, fish, broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, salad, blueberries mixed with plain almonds. I eat two meals, one at noon and one between 5-6 PM. 18 hour fast, but you could probably expand the window for eating a bit. All my life I heard diet is 70% of being fit. For me it’s more than that. Lost 100 pounds while I could hardly walk at all from November to May. One more key part has been black coffee which I hated prior. I learned to like it and drink a big cup at 7:30 AM and again after supper to help fill me up. Okay that’s all. Maybe this will help somebody. Low Carb, Gluten Free, Intermittent Fasting! It works!

Kudos to you on that heel click at the end. 🎉 You mentioned that you might get a personal trainer. I think that would be a great idea. Besides giving you excellent advice on what types of exercises would benefit you, they also will make sure that you are using the machines correctly. I remember being at the gym once and on a machine. A trainer walked by giving a prospective client a tour. He looked at me, paused his tour, and came over and showed me something that I was doing incorrectly. 😍

One thing you might want to consider adding, which I've found is hugely helpful, is balance training. This can be as simple as standing on one foot or as complex as standing on a balance disk (I have a $18 Dyna-Disc knock-off found on Amazon) with your eyes closed -- there's a lot of variations in between. Barefoot training also has totally changed not only how I hike but how my body functions in general and has made my balance many, many times better than it ever was even when I was young (I won't say how old, but I'm older than you, Laura 😂)

Great job sticking with it and prioritizing health! Something I'm curious about is the heart rate range during your cardio. To become super efficient and use fat as your primary fuel source, it's critical to be fully aerobic, 60-70% of your max HR. Anything above and you'll be using sugars/glycogen for energy and that's probably not what you want for optimal metabolic health. So, you can slow down and decrease your intensity until your fitness level improves along with metabolic efficiency. Best regards!
@peaks4pounds
3 ай бұрын
I track my heart rate using my Coros Apex 2 fitness watch. For cardio I am typically in the 120-160 range. If it hits 160 I slow down.

@@peaks4pounds, that's awesome to hear! Such a public sharing of your health journey is inspiring to so many! I don't know how old you are buy my guess is that HR is still much too high for efficient fat utilization and metabolic health. I know it's hard to slow down because it feels like "we're not working hard enough", buy you are. I'm happy to help further, if you ever want to chat.

GO YOU!! Keep up the good work!!! But don't lock your knees out on the leg press. You want to strengthen your knees, not kill them LOL!! Also try to throw in some single leg exercises when you feel up to it since walking, hiking, and running is a one legged exercise. And, believe it or not, hip strength directly strengthens your knees. I'm 65 and had a knee issue recently and it killed my running for a few weeks. I think a coach is an awesome idea. You’re doing great. It’s definitely hard to force yourself to do all that exercise. Especially when it’s hot outside. Takes a lot of discipline. And add more that you are willing to put it on KZitem. More courage than I have. And as you have stated the most important thing is to stick to it. It takes quite a long time to get into good shape. Especially when we are older. I think people quit because they get discouraged because they don’t see results soon enough to suit them. Happens to me too. Especially with the weight loss. Obviously, a very hard thing to do that’s why so many people are not successful and gain the weight back. You might want to consider doing an online personal training course because you’re clearly interested in it. You would learn a lot.

I love these training ideas! An (admittedly not cheap) exercise option that I picked up during early COVID is an stair climber like the Pro-Form Pro-HIIT series (not shilling, it's just what I have). These are a hybrid between an elliptical (which is low impact but poor for cardio) and a stair climber (which is good for cardio and climbing strength but hard on the joints). These Pro-HIIT devices are a good balance between the two and have done wonders for my off-season mountain ascending fitness. The are definitely built for taller / longer limbed people (I'm 5'4") and, while I can use the furthest hand grips with the most leverage, it's a bit of a reach. The other hand grips work fine, though. (The reach isn't bad, it simulates using poles pretty well.)
@peaks4pounds

It's tough to fully simulate the action of hiking on trail. There is another machine at my gym called a tread climber. Kinda like a treadmill/stair climber hybrid. It's pretty close to the movement of stepping up and down on an incline.
