Most interesting! You would know. I'm a horse person and have had Aussies and border collie cross dogs for many years. Not too long ago, I was at animal control (the pound) and found this purebred 8-month-old blue heeler. I rescued her and can see that she's exactly what you are saying about the breed. Cool dog, anyhow. I value your opinion and thanks for sharing!

I fully agree with you on that. Myself, I never owned a Border Collie. Yet worked with a lot of them. I owned Blue Heelers. For on reason only. I was in FFA and we hand broke our calves to a halter and a Heeler would stay with me as I always worked the back end. A Border Collie would sometimes, as I call it. Would have a Squirrel moment and either stop, run to another calf or just lag and loss interest. With a Heeler. They have IMP bred into them protection of the owner. They will not leave you. LOL Found that out training my first calf. Buddy pulling the halter said. Let me push I am tired. We were using my dog mind you I had from a pup and was two years old at the time. Guess what, A calf trying to halter break does not go forward with a barking, yipping and biting dog in their face. She would not get more then 3 to 5 ft away from me when at the AG barn. Later in years when I got married and had a son. He was in ag also. He wanted a Border Collie. Had a buddy with one. We went to the barn and worked a calf. Next day we used my Heeler. The Heeler did and does a better job for what we wanted. Mind you. We do not have herd cows. Only raised FFA cattle and pin raised ones. Been there done that with what you are talking about. They are kind of like a rifle in my opinion. Each one is suited fordifferent jobs.

Couldn't agree more. I was saying the other day that I have yet to see a blue heeler that really has a lot of drive. Unfortunately most of the ones I've seen, if not all, are just kind of going through the motions because they're being told what to do

Kind of hard to admit that I agree. I grew up around gritty hardworking Blue Heelers, and in the circles I travel, I don't see them anymore. I always loved them, but am glad to not have one now, as they wouldn't be good "pet" material. Two weeks without working, and they'd be tearing something up or killing something! Do you have any experience with the Idaho Shag Dogs, or anything to share about them?

From what i can see the american heelers have been corrupted with some other breeds. In Australia the blue heeler is VERY instinctive. They do a job the border collie cant do which is move big animals that will refuse to move for a collie.

Have you looked more into the working line Heelers that were actually bred to push livestock in Australia and still have that drive in them? Just like with the German Shepherd’s. The American bred German shepherds were terrible for work (other than some cases) vs the European Working lines that are bred to still have the high drives. Same thing with the heelers. In America and they AKC in some breeds they breed the drive out of is what you see with most American bred Heelers. I’d just say if you ever do consider trying a heeler again to look overseas where they still breed the high work drives into them! Love your channel by the way!

I've got 2 heelers one red and one blue. My blue one is like you said only intrested when action then she's done. I bought my red heeler from a herding working kennel called spade's from the us only breed herding cattledogs. Now she can work till she's dies. Love to just move then where ever I tell her. Also loves the action. Holding the sheep is boring that's when an eye would come in handy. Shes also great att collecting the sheep to me.

interesting. I currently have a 9 month old border heeler pup (border collie/blue heeler mix) I see traits of both breeds in him obviously from a physical aspect but also from a behavioral aspect. He can be very sweet and mellow but only when he's tired which is rare. Highly energetic dog and he loves chasing and fetching. Right now I'm just having trouble getting him to listen to me and focus and retrieve the same toy I threw. He will choose the toy he wants and ditch the one I threw for another one depending on his mood. Other than that, he is incredibly smart and caught onto basic commands such as sit, shake, lay down, roll over, and leave it. Still working on getting him to work on patience and stay. He is obviously not an active working dog, but it's interesting to learn about both breeds.

As much as natural instinct plays a role. I would say training plays a role. But i dont get my dogs for herding. I get my dogs for companions to go on adventures with. My border/rott is perfect and i hope the border heeler from a woops litter can play a similar role but also be used to help train one another with some specific dog to dog interactions.

It's Border Collies all the way! They love what they do when you give them a job to do. I had an Australian Shepherd that was papered, and he was the most stupidest dog I ever had. All he wanted to do was chase moving tires. That didn't work out so well for him.

My stockdog trainer had border collies for over 20 years. When I started training with him five years ago, he had 3 kelpies. He still has 2 kelpies but has gained 4 border collie pups over the five years. Having two cattle line border collies myself, I don't see myself getting a different breed. I rather enjoy the finesse of the border collie using its eye to move stock. ...I know kelpies work the same way.

I’ve had both, and by FAR the blue heelers make better stock dogs. Blue heelers are much more “low impact “ , they can go in and pick out a single animal rather than always moving the entire herd. Border collies on the other hand have been bred so “pure” that they are hard to train dew to their over hyper personalities and “natural herding instincts”.

Then why aren’t heelers dominating cattle dog trial ? Also why aren’t heelers selling for big money and lastly if they are the better stock dog why are more people using border collies than heelers

We catch wild cattle. I like Border Collie dogs but they usually can't handle it. We started using Catahoula dogs. They can put the cattle together and hold them until the cattle decide that it is best to drive to the pen. If the cattle try to run away the dogs are tuff enough to bring them back. Again we like Border Collie dogs. They just can't hold up in the heat down here and they are not tuff enough for what we do.

I like Border Collie dogs but I just haven't found the right one yet. Those catahoula dogs are good for what we do. The border collies she has will work sheep very well. You acquired a fetch breed. You will have to teach him to drive. They are headers. Gotta teach them to be bum dogs. They have to learn they can work the head by looking past the bums when driving. Some do it better than others but they will learn to drive. ...you also will have to help it learn how to use its fetching instincts. The dogs are born with instincts but have to be taught how to use them efficiently.
@sandrine1025

You also better hope you got more of a "hard" dog. Some of these border collies don't handle pressure as well, even cattle line ones. The dog can be harder to start but if you train it well, it'll get the job done for you.
