It's one thing to do an elite level harmonica solo....It's another thing to do an elite level rap verse in your song...but it's a whole other fucking thing to come out of an elite level harmonica solo INTO an elite level rap verse....good. god. almighty.

Was lucky enough to be at a Foo Fighters concert several years ago in Indianapolis when Popper came on stage and had a harmonica/guitar battle with Dave Grohl. He's probably the best harmonica player on the planet. I've always loved his voice too. This album came out when I was in HS and it was one of my favorites. When the Mountains When Again was my favorite song after Hook. They teach Hook in university music theory classes b/c its so genius. It's Pachelbel's Canon repeated over and over.

whoa, that's interesting that they teach it in a Music Theory course at some college! i haven't intently listened to this song since the late 90's, and man, i appreciate the intricacies of this song now more than ever before. it's absolutely nuts! John Popper essentially went from singing very well, to giving a world-renowned harmonica performance, to giving a solid display of staccato rapping abilities, all within 3 minutes.

This is exactly it. His vocal style, runs, vibrato, etc.. are pretty much mimicking a harmonica, which makes total sense being that John has played since he was toddler.

Exactly, the way he controls his air is simply amazing. In the late '80's and '90's I seen John Popper blowing eight and sixteenth notes on harmonica and blues harps for twelve bars at 120bpm straight away at many jazz and blues festivals...

I love that this song was such a hit...considering it's a commentary on the fact that, in order to _be_ a hit on the Pop charts, a song doesn't actually have to _say_ anything of substance; it just needs a vocal with lots of flourishes and a good _hook_ (all played over one of the most familiar chord progressions in the history of popular music...Pachelbel's "Cannon in D"). Seriously, look up the lyrics. ♥ Of course, it certainly helps that this band is _tight,_ and John Popper is _ridiculously talented!_ Love the song, love the front man, love this band!!!

Blues Traveler is one of the greatest live bands ever. They arguably sound BETTER than the studio sound. It's Popper's voice, his gravelly tone carries the air better live. And his harmonica playing is next-level, they don't get much better. And watching it live blows your mind that someone could be THAT good on an instrument that small.

Clicked on this post because I like seeing people react to the amazing harmonica. This reactor, being a singer, was very focused on Poppers vocals, which are great. Then Popper hit the harmonica run and dudes eyes opened wide. "This band is so talented, it makes my head hurt...." Yeah! That's about right.

I think his singing is heavily influenced by him playing the harmonica. He literally sounds like one at times. The way he falls off of notes, the runs, and the vibrato is very harmonica esque. He also has an insane ear for music. That solo is so tasteful and awesome.

I wonder if years of playing harmonica has just given tremendous mouth and tongue muscle control , that he continues the same runs and riffs in his singing, that makes his voice so unique? I mean I'm sure it has something to do with it, but he may have sang completely differently before years on harp.
