Hello Sir, een excellent job you did do, to see a mechanic working instead of a amateur is good to see, I just have one question if you do not mind, why you put the Staburags grease just on the boots and not on the splines. As far as I know Staburags npt 30 is more suitable for splines then the castrol TA grease, also the Castrol MP3 grease is better for the job I think. I am sure you have a good reason not to put the Staurags on the splines, can you tell me and enlighten me? Keep up the good work.. :)

FYI for spline grease... "If you let a dealer or shop change your rear tire, be certain they are using Moly-60 paste or Krytox, or you're going to be needing new drive splines in about 50,000 miles. Guaranteed. I recommend you remove and replace your own wheels, leaving the spline cleaning and lubrication up to you. If you want nothing to do with this, then I recommend you have a talk with your favorite mechanic before tires come up, and buy your own tube of lubricant if necessary. Moly greases with 60% + molybdenum disulfide content: Honda Moly 60 paste, $9 for 3oz, pn 08734-0001 at your Honda dealer, or $8 from Kim Leong, STOC 3073, California Sport Touring. LocTite Moly paste, 65% molybdenum disulfide. $20 for an 8oz tube from Enco, part #505-1197, 800-873-3626 TS-70 Moly Paste, 4 oz. ctg. $14 from TSMoly. (800) 508-5545 An alternative to moly is the new poly-flourinated lubricants made by DuPont called Krytox Teflon Bearing Grease. These chemicals are simply magic. They have almost no known solvents, are chemically inert, and don't burn at any temperature, even in a pure oxygen atmosphere. This is pretty clearly the only grease to use. See this article. Nascar mechanics have found that Krytox grease can reduce the temperature of spline joints on drive shafts by 150°. Also, this stuff lasts forever. It is, unfortunately, quite expensive." motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Shaft.html

Superb! Couple questions/comments: - Are R1200gs driveshafts balanced, and would it benefit to mark original position of spline rotation before removing it, as well as spline position at rear hub (to keep matched from factory when reinstalling)? - Would a stiffer and slightly wider brush (just as fine) to apply Castrol and rubber boot seal pastes help to improve penetration and coverage in less time? - Would a metal brushed tapered pipe cleaner remove the gear oil sludge from the drain plug faster and better than the screw driver? - When using a torque wrench, should one attempt to push downward at the 3 o'clock position for most consistent and accurate settings? - Would it be advisable to spray the rear brake caliper and surrounding areas with brake cleaner prior to doing the work? - Should the rear tire and assembly be tested for trueness and wobble before commencing the work as well as you did after? - When using solvents coming in contact with your hands, should you be wearing gloves at all times? These are nit picky comments, considering your amazing attention to detail. Well done!

Mine is seized on the spline at the rear. I can't get it off. I saw yours comme of with the drive shaft and was hoping to see it come off but you edited. How does one get the drive shaft off from the spline when its seized on?

Hi Marc There are a lot of posts like this. I don’t understand why BMW does not add a check to their service regime. Did you solve it yourself, or did BMW provide any support? My 21,000 mile 2015 GS rear drive bearings have failed and I have been sent a picture of my rusted shaft drive which apparently also needs replacing. It looks like the drive shaft/rear drive is badly designed and the BMW service does not stipulate checking or greasing. BMW Motorrad in Munich does not want to support me- which I think is ducking their obligations. My (dumb?) question is what is the impact of a rusted final drive? Apart from it being rusted - and even if it is rusted to the rear drive, can this cause any other failures - or is it just a nice to have? Did you experience any other issues? The GS is an expensive Adventure bike and BMW have a duty of care to stand behind their brand if they have made a design/ manufacturing/ service issue. I want to raise the profile if it is a genuine widespread issue. Thanks very much again. All the best Colin
@marcducati

@@colincollier5107 It went to the service and nothing. They said it can stay like that. I lubed the from port and that will do. I don't see an issue with the back being seized anyway. A friend has the same thing and has 125'000 km with original bearings. I am not going to think about it too much. I had no rust in the final drive anyway.
